
Pitt Drops Heartbreaker In Overtime At Clemson

CLEMSON, SC – The Pitt women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on the road on Thursday night at Clemson as the Tigers outscored the Panthers 12-4 in overtime to secure the 75-67 victory. With the win, Clemson improved to 6-11 overall and 2-4 in ACC play.
The Panthers played a strong defensive fourth quarter on Thursday night as they were able to hold a four-point lead, 63-59, with 3:35 left in the game. The Pitt offense however, struggled down the stretch as the Tigers were able to tie the game, 63-63, with just over a minute left in regulation. The Panthers staved off two go-ahead attempts by Clemson over the final minute to give Pitt the ball with .7 seconds left. After a deflection on the first inbound attempt, Aysia Bugg threw a great pass to Rita Igbokwe at the rim but her layup attempt bounced out to force overtime.
In the overtime period, the Tigers used some stingy defense and some timely offense as they outscored Pitt 12-4 to secure the home victory.
Aysia Bugg opened the scoring with a contested three before Rita Igbokwe grabbed an offensive rebound and finished off a layup to give Pitt the early 5-3 lead over the Tigers. The home side responded with a 8-2 run to take the 11-7 lead before Gabbie Green knocked down a triple to bring Pitt within one with four minutes left in the opening quarter. Pitt went cold down the stretch of the first quarter as the Tigers went on a 9-2 run to take the 20-12 lead into the second.
Pitt was able to cut the deficit from eight to one midway through the second quarter as Green scored eight points and Emy Hayford netted five to make the score 26-25 in favor of the Tigers at the media timeout. The two sides went back-and-forth down the stretch of the second quarter but Bugg took over the scoring load as she netted the final seven for Pitt including a triple at the buzzer to send it to halftime tied, 36-36.
Pitt had a great start to the third quarter as Green knocked down her fourth triple of the game to open the scoring before the Panthers went on a 6-0 run to take the 47-42 lead and force a Clemson timeout. The 6-0 run was sparked by a pair of Cara Judkins layups and a Dayshanette Harris drive and contested finish. Pitt pushed their lead out to as many as five, 56-51, late in the third after a layup by Amber Brown but the Tigers closed out the scoring in the quarter to send it to the fourth with Pitt leading 56-53.
Pitt went up by as many as five in the fourth quarter after Brown finished off a layup but the Tigers kept clawing themselves back into the game. The two sides exchanged buckets over the final 10 minutes and went to the overtime period knotted, 63-63.
Pitt couldn't close the game out in overtime as they finished the game going 1-for-8 in the extra frame.
Green led all Pitt scorers with 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals while connecting on a career-high five three-pointers. Bugg chipped in with 14 points while Brown had five points, 11 rebounds and two steals across 34 minutes of work. Judkins finished off her night with eight points, seven rebounds and a career-high three blocks.
