Second Half Shooting Struggles Haunt Panthers In Loss To Syracuse
1/19/2020 3:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team wasn't able to maintain their hot shooting from the first quarter as they fell at the Petersen Events Center on Sunday afternoon to the Syracuse Orange. With the win, Syracuse improved to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in ACC play.
Pitt got out to a great start on Sunday afternoon thanks in large part to some hot shooting early on for Gabbie Green as the junior started the game 4-for-4 from the floor for 10 points as the Panthers raced out to the 15-8 lead at the first media timeout. Aysia Bugg knocked down a pair of triples down the stretch and Amber Brown made a free throw as the Panthers went to the second quarter with the 22-17 lead, matching their season-high for points scored in the first quarter.
The Orange flipped the script in the second quarter as they outscored the Panthers 27-11 in the quarter to take an 11-point lead into the locker room. Dayshanette Harris opened the second quarter with back-to-back buckets inside the paint but the Orange responded with a quick 12-0 spurt to regain the 32-26 lead midway through the quarter. The visitors continued their strong play down the stretch of the quarter as they closed out the first half with the 44-33 lead.
The Panthers struggled to make up any ground in the third quarter as Green made a floater in the paint to cut the deficit to nine early on but the Orange fought back and closed out the quarter strong. The Orange outscored Pitt 16-14 in the third as they took the 60-47 lead into the final quarter.
The final 10 minutes weren't pretty for either side as the Panthers went just 1-for-13 from the floor in the final frame while Syracuse went 4-for-13. The four-point fourth quarter is the lowest scoring quarter for Pitt this season as the Orange secured the 69-51 road victory.
Green led all Pitt players with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists across 35 minutes of work while Bugg finished off her game with 13 points on 4-for-9 from behind the arc. Brown continued to perform on the glass as she snagged a game-high 11 rebounds while Harris came off the bench and posted eight points, three assists and three steals in 22 minutes of action.
As a team, Pitt won the rebounding battle 46-40 but could only turn 19 offensive rebounds into six points in the loss. The Panthers turned the ball over a season-high 26 times and the Orange made this mistakes hurt as they notched 29 points off of the Pitt turnovers.
