Panthers Draw Rhode Island On Friday Night, 1-1

PITTSBURGH – Behind a goal in the 85th minute by freshman Sydney Marasco, the University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team played Rhode Island to a 1-1 draw on Friday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Panthers dominated most of the match as they owned the 19-8 edge in shots but couldn't pull out the victory in front of their home fans.

- After some pressure by the Panthers early on, the Rams were able to net the opening goal of the night as Rebecca D'Anna took an errant Pitt pass and beat Amaia Pena to the left corner to take the 1-0 lead.
- The Panthers earned a dangerous chance in the 42nd minute as Amanda West found a loose ball and blasted a shot towards goal but the Rhode Island keeper made a great stop to preserve the 1-0 lead heading into half.
- In the 58th minute, Juliana Vazquez had a good scoring chance but her header was cleared away by a Rhode Island defender near the goal line.
- A couple minutes later, West made a great run and ripped a shot that went just wide of the right corner.
- The Panthers finally broke through with the game-tying goal in the 85th minute as freshman Sydney Marasco finished off her first career goal after a great cross into the box by Amanda West.
- The two teams exchanged chances down the final minutes of the second half as they entered overtime knotted, 1-1.
- After a scoreless first overtime period, the Panthers looked to have an upper hand in the second overtime as West nearly won the game for Pitt in the 105th minute but her right-footed shot just missed the right corner of the net.
- Neither side could break through over the final five minutes as they each earned their first draw of the season.
- The Panthers are now 14-14-1 all-time against Atlantic 10 opponents including a 0-0-1 record vs. Rhode Island.
- Freshman Sydney Marasco was able to net her first career goal in the second half as she finished off her first career start with two shots for the Panthers.
- Amanda West continued her point streak to start her career as she earned an assist on Marasco's goal. The freshman has now netted at least one point in all five matches for Pitt as she leads the team with six goals, two assists and 14 points.
- Her 14 points on the season are the most by a Panther since 2015 when Taylor Pryce netted 16 points.
- Pitt held the dominant 19-8 edge in shots and the 7-1 edge in corner kicks on Friday night.
- The Panthers had seven players record at least two shots led by West who had a team-high four in the draw. Juliana Vazquez and Dixon Veltri each recorded three shots on the night.
- In goal, Amaia Pena finished off her night with two saves while her counterpart for Rhode Island finished with a game-high four.
- Melisa Tava recorded the first start of her Pitt career on Friday night while Dixon Veltri earned her first start of the season.
- The Panthers used their fifth different starting lineup through five matches on the season as five freshman earned the nod in the starting XI.
- Prior to Friday's match, the Panthers honored their three-player senior class of Juliana Vazquez, Amaia Pena and Cheyenne Hudson with a pre-match ceremony on the field.
- The Panthers will stay at home for their next two matches as they welcome the Saint Joseph's Hawks to Ambrose Urbanic Field this Sunday at 1:00 pm.
- Pitt will then play host to the VCU Rams on Thursday night at 7:00 pm.
