
No. 4 Pitt Volleyball Sweeps Virginia to Open ACC Play

Panthers Earn 1-0 Start to ACC Play for Seventh Consecutive Season
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (12-1, 1-0 ACC) swept Virginia (8-6, 0-1 ACC) to open ACC play on the road Wednesday night at Memorial Gym.
The Panthers earned their eighth sweep of the year (25-11, 25-17, 25-21), and their second when playing on the road.
Redshirt senior Stephanie Williams posted a well-rounded stat line of 11 kills, eight digs and a career-high four service aces. Junior outside hitter Kayla Lund led Pitt with 12 kills on .579 hitting (12k-1e-19a) and added four digs.
Pitt posted its second-best hitting percentage of the year at .409 while holding the Hoos to .184. The Panthers had the advantage in kills (46-30), assists (42-29), service aces (10-2), digs (32-25) and blocks (7.5-7.0).
WITH THE WIN…
Set One: No. 4 Pitt 25, Virginia 11
An early 9-2 run, which ended with back-to-back Williams aces, gave the Panthers an 11-4 advantage. Pitt extended the margin with a 3-0 run to reach a double-figure lead (17-7). The Panthers finished the set with their largest margin of victory of the season, 25-11, hitting .520 for the frame. Williams led the Panthers with seven kills on .600 hitting (7k-1e-10a).
Set Two: No. 4 Pitt 25, Virginia 17
Pitt sped out to a 4-0 start, but later Virginia used a 4-1 run to come back within one, down 5-4. The Panthers answered with a 4-1 run to go back up by four (9-5), with two more aces by Williams. Pitt secured momentum of the set with an 8-0 run to gain a double-figure lead (19-9), but a 7-2 Hoos run cut the advantage to five (21-16). A 3-0 run by the Panthers brought up set point, and senior Alix Dreier secured the set with her first kill of the season.
Set Three: No. 4 Pitt 25, Virginia 21
Virginia kept it close for the majority of the frame, with seven ties early in the set, the latest being 11-11. Pitt started to pull away with a 5-1 run to earn a 21-16 lead. Virginia out-scored Pitt, 5-4, to finish the set, but the Panthers completed the sweep with a 25-21 win.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will host Virginia Tech (7-6, 0-0 ACC) for their ACC home opener Sunday at 4 p.m. ET at Fitzgerald Field House. The match will be televised by ACC Network.
