Panthers Sweep Virginia Tech at Fitzgerald Field House
PITTSBURGH – The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (13-1, 2-0), earned its second consecutive sweep to open ACC play, defeating Virginia Tech (7-8, 0-2) in straight sets (25-14, 25-22, 25-18) at Fitzgerald Field House Sunday evening.
Junior outside hitter Kayla Lund led the Panthers with a match-high 12 kills on .385 hitting. She added eight digs and two blocks. Senior middle Layne Van Buskirk and junior Chinaza Ndee recorded eight kills apiece. Sophomore middle Sabrina Starks posted six kills and a match-high four blocks for Pitt.
Redshirt senior libero Hali Hillegas produced 11 digs, and three-time ACC Freshman of the Week Lexis Akeo led Pitt with 33 assists. She added seven digs and two kills for the Panthers.
Pitt held the Hokies to a .084 hitting percentage while posting a .354 clip as a team. The Panthers had the advantage in kills (46-25), assists (42-25), service aces (3-2), digs (43-32) and blocks (5.5-3.0).
WITH THE WIN…
Set One: No. 4 Pitt 25, Virginia Tech 14
Pitt made light work of the Hokies in the first set, with an 8-2 run bringing up a double-figure lead for the Panthers (18-7). The Panthers hit .500 for the frame while holding Virginia Tech to just .080. Starks and Lund posted four kills apice.
Set Two: No. 4 Pitt 25, Virginia Tech 22
The Panthers were slow to start the second set, with Virginia Tech using an 11-4 run to gain a 12-7 lead. Pitt was able to tie the frame at 14 after a 7-2 stretch, but the Hokies made a late 6-1 run to go up, 20-15. The Panthers surged to end the set, finishing on a 10-2 run for the comeback win, 25-22.
Set Three: No. 4 Pitt 25, Virginia Tech 18
After a 5-5 early tie, Pitt outscored the Hokies by half to gain a 15-10 lead. Lund earned her 12th kill of the day to make it 18-12 in the Panthers' favor. From that Point, Pitt finished the match on a 7-6 advantage to win, 25-18.

Pitt will begin a four-match road trip, starting with Miami (Oct. 4) and Florida State (Oct. 6).

- Pitt's record improved to 11-6 all-time against Virginia Tech and 6-2 when playing in Pittsburgh.
- The Panthers' winning streak against the Hokies extended to six matches. Pitt's last loss against Virginia Tech came Nov. 25, 2015 (3-2) at home. The Panthers have won the last two meetings at Fitzgerald Field House (2016, 2017).
- The Panthers' record improved to 30-2 when ranked inside the AVCA top 10 and 3-1 when ranked inside the top five.
