Student-Athletes, Staff Members to Travel with Coalition for Christian Outreach
PITTSBURGH – Sixteen student-athletes from the University of Pittsburgh will travel to the Dominican Republic for a weeklong mission trip with the Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO), as announced Saturday.
The group will depart Sunday and return Saturday, May 4.
Led by Mark Steffey and Kelly Cooke, the Panthers will travel to Jarabacoa, a town in the central part of the Dominican Republic. Working with Doulous Ministries, the student-athletes and staff will be doing service projects, assisting with family and children's programs as well as learning about the ongoing ministry.
Steffey and Cooke have been working as campus ministers with the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics since 2008 and 2007, respectively. The pair has taken more than 135 student-athletes on mission trips during their tenure. In December 2018, CCO brought a group to St. Thomas where they helped with ongoing recovery efforts from the impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Pitt football athletic trainer Dale Thornton and with his wife, Chynna, will accompany the student-athletes on the trip.
"My wife and I are so excited to make this mission trip with Pitt student-athletes while representing Pitt Athletics and giving back to those in the Dominican Republic," Thornton said. "It's an honor to have an opportunity like this to grow in our faith while serving and helping others. I had heard so many positive things about this trip from athletes who went in the past. Mark Steffey has done an unbelievable job to organize everything, and he deserves so much credit for making this an annual trip for Pitt student-athletes."
Participating student-athletes include:
Cal Adomitis (football)
Wesley Ahart (swimming & diving)
LJ Bentley (wrestling)
Jake Bowery (swimming & diving)
Brian Burgess (football)
Grant Carrigan (football)
Dale Clish (cheer)
Rebekah Jenkins (gymnastics)
Caitlyn Kline (gymnastics)
Robert Lee (wrestling)
Kayla Lund (volleyball)
Kellen McAlone (football)
Avery Perosa (volleyball)
Kiley Robatin (gymnastics)
Charli Spivey (gymnastics)
Megan Tripp (gymnastics)
"I can't wait to head down to the Dominican Republic," Clish said. "Mission trips always evoke personal and spiritual growth via experiencing new cultures and putting in work for the benefit of others. I'm so excited to experience that growth with my fellow student-athletes at Pitt!"
