Panthers Fall to Nittany Lions
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped its midweek matchup to Penn State, 8-3, Wednesday night at Vartabedian Field.
The game was tight through five frames, but a four-run sixth inning by the Nittany Lions led to the eventual PSU win.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight started on the mound for Pitt, allowing eight runs (four earned) while striking out three through 5.2 innings of action. Senior Taylor Rahach relieved Knight in the contest, throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless ball while allowing just one hit.
"I thought [Brittany Knight] threw a good ball game against a team that came out and was attacking pretty well," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "I thought she did a good job of settling in after the first inning and really creating her outs and moving the ball well, and just winning some sequences."
The Panthers produced seven hits at the plate via four different batters. Sophomore Hunter Levesque led the team with a career-high three hits while adding two RBIs and one run. Seniors Gabrielle Fredericks, Olivia Gray and Taylor Myers and sophomore Morgan Batesole all collected one hit apiece, with Fredericks adding an RBI in the contest.
"Hunter [Levesque] definitely started out the game the way she envisioned it, that was part of her plan – coming out here with a bunt for a base hit," said Hermanek. "Then she just was just connecting well. It was great to watch her do her thing. It was a good day from Hunter."
SCORING SUMMARY
Penn State opened the scoring in the first inning, using a two-RBI home run to take an early lead.
The Panthers collected their first run of the game in the fourth frame, with Fredericks using an RBI-single to center field to score Levesque from third.
The Nittany Lions added two more runs in the fifth inning, using a two-RBI long ball over the right field wall to take a 4-1 lead.
Pitt answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs of its own. With the bases loaded, Levesque roped a single to right field, sending home Myers and freshman Hannah Bach to put the score at 4-3.
Penn State then took a commanding lead in the sixth inning, scoring four runs in the frame to earn an 8-3 advantage and the eventual win.
