Gray and Haynes Blast Home Runs in Contest with Tar Heels
The Panthers deployed a trio of pitchers in senior Taylor Rahach, redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight and freshman Abby Edwards. The group combined to allow 11 earned runs while striking out three in seven innings of work.
Pitt produced seven hits at the plate from five different players. Senior Olivia Gray led the way with a 2-for-3 effort while adding two RBI, two runs and a deep shot, while sophomore Morgan Batesole also posted a 2-for-3 showing to go along with an RBI. Senior Taylor Myers, juniors Walker Barbee, Alexee Haynes and Connor McGaffic and freshman Katlyn Pavlick all added one hit apiece, with Haynes recording a home run in the contest.
SCORING SUMMARY
North Carolina opened up the scoring in the first frame, recording three in the inning to take an early lead.
The Panthers collected two runs of their own in the second inning, with Gray sending a two-run bomb off the scoreboard to put the game at 3-2.
The Tar Heels answered in the top of the third, adding three more runs to take a 6-2 lead.
North Carolina then recorded another three runs in the top of the fourth, taking a 9-2 advantage.
Pitt made a slight dent in the Tar Heel lead in the bottom of the inning, with Batesole sending a single down the left field line to score Gray from second.
The Tar Heels again answered in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs to put their lead at 11-3.
The Panthers made some noise in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two off of a long ball by Haynes, but ultimately couldn't find enough offense to catch North Carolina.

The Panthers will face the Tar Heels 12 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at Vartabedian Field for game two of their series.
