Pitt Tops Wichita State while Falling to Central Michigan
Pitt dropped its first contest of the day to the Chippewas, 11-6, before coming out victorious against the Shockers by a score of 4-2.
The Panthers were forced to use three pitchers for game one in the forms of senior Taylor Rahach, redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight and freshman Abby Edwards. The trio gave up 11 runs in total, but only three were earned, as Pitt committed five errors in the contest.
Pitt saw some solid performances at the plate in game one, with senior Olivia Gray batting 3-for-4 while adding two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Hunter Levesque posted a 2-for-2 showing to go along with two walks, one run and one RBI while freshman Katlyn Pavlick continued her hot start to the season with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, adding her second home run of the year.
The Panthers only had to use one pitcher against the Shockers, as Knight went the distance in an impressive performance. The Windham, Ohio, native allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out one in Pitt's first win of the season.
At the plate, Pavlick again had a strong showing, going 2-for-4 while scoring a run. Five other Panthers collected one hit apiece in Levesque, seniors Marissa DeMatteo and Alexis Solak and sophomores Brie Horrell and Chandler Walter.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Central Michigan opened up the scoring in inning number one, collecting two runs off of a sac fly and RBI-single.
The Panthers immediately answered back in the top of the second, adding two runs of their own. Levesque used a triple to send in Solak for Pitt's first run of the game, roping a ball to right center. Sophomore Morgan Batesole then scored Levesque after grounding out to the second baseman, evening the score at two apiece.
Pitt earned its first lead of the game in the top of the third, scoring two more runs in the frame. Pavlick hit a leadoff single before stealing second, with Gray sending her home following a double to left center. Gray then scored later in the inning from third following a groundout by Solak to short, putting the score at 4-2.
The Chippewas evened the contest in the bottom of the frame, adding two runs following a throwing error.
In the bottom of the fourth, Central Michigan would add three more runs, taking the lead for good.
Pitt added another run in the fifth off of a solo shot by Pavlick, and tacked on one more score in the seventh after an RBI-single sent home Gray, but the Panthers ultimately couldn't muster enough offense to catch the Chippewas, eventually falling by a score of 11-6.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME TWO
Pitt's matchup with the Shockers was a defensive stalemate to start, with neither team recording a hit until Pavlick blasted a leadoff single to center field in the top of the fourth inning. The Panthers would go on to score the first run of the game in that same inning, with a single up the middle by Walter sending home Pavlick.
Pitt added another run in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Horrell sent a leadoff single down the first base line, but ended up advancing to third following a fielding error by the outfielder. In the next at-bat, Levesque used an RBI-double to give the Panthers their second run of the contest.
The Shockers fought back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs of their own. Following a leadoff walk, a Wichita State triple led to two runs for the Shockers after a throwing error, evening the score at 2-2.
The back-and-forth continued in the top of six inning, as Pitt added two more runs in the frame. Following a leadoff walk by Gray to start the inning, a single to right center by Solak later in the inning gave the Panthers their third run of the game. Pitt then loaded the bases, and a walk by Levesque gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead they would never relinquish.
