Panthers Fall to Shockers in Last Game of Cougar Classic
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped its final contest of the Cougar Classic to Wichita State, 7-2, Sunday afternoon in Charleston, S.C.
The Panthers finish the weekend with a 1-4 overall record, with their lone win coming in a Saturday night matchup against the Shockers.
"Opening weekend brought us some adversities that we as a team need to rise up to so we can reach our goals," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "In our win against Wichita State I saw great focus and execution from our players, and that's the type of team effort we need to continue with moving forward. We have some things we need to work on this week and some other positive aspects of our game that we need to sustain moving forward."
Senior Taylor Rahach earned the start on the mound, allowing two earned runs while striking out one in 3.2 innings of work before being relieved. Freshman Abby Edwards came in to replace Rahach, allowing three earned runs while striking out one in 3.1 innings of action.
Offensively, three Panthers collected hits at the plate. Sophomore Brie Horrell went 1-for-3 on the day, launching a two-run long ball over the right field wall. Senior Olivia Gray and sophomore Hunter Levesque also added 1-for-3 performances in the contest.
SCORING SUMMARY
Wichita State got on the board first, with a runner scoring from third in the top of the first following an infield error.
The Panthers immediately answered back in the bottom of the frame, with Horrell blasting a two-run homer over the right field wall to give Pitt a 2-1 lead.
The Shockers evened the game in the top of the second, again scoring off an infield error.
Wichita State added two more in the fourth inning, with a two-run homer to left center giving the Shockers a 4-2 advantage.
In the sixth inning, Wichita State used a bases-loaded double to add three more, putting the score at 7-2 and leading to the eventual win.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will head to Raleigh, N.C., to compete in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge starting Friday, Feb. 15, where they will face Wisconsin and Nebraska two times each.
