Panthers Battle Until The End But Fall At Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, GA – The Pitt women's basketball team (9-15, 0-10 ACC) fell on the road on Thursday night to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets by the score of 67-55. Sophomore Cara Judkins finished off her impressive night with 11 points and 11 rebounds in her second career double-double.
After the Yellow Jackets opened the game with five straight, the Panthers were able to respond with a 10-2 run of their own as Kauai Bradley knocked down a triple to open the run and Cassidy Walsh drained her first triple of the game to give Pitt the early 10-7 lead. The Yellow Jackets then took the 11-10 lead but Walsh buried another triple to send the game to the first media timeout with Pitt leading 13-11. The Yellow Jackets closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to take the 17-15 lead into the second quarter.
The Panthers opened the second quarter with five straight as Jaala Henry finished off a layup and Bradley knocked down her first triple of the second quarter. After the Yellow Jackets tied the game, 20-20, Bradley knocked down another triple and Danielle Garven made a pretty post move and finished off the layup to give Pitt the five-point lead, 25-20, midway through the quarter. The final five minutes of the opening half were owned by the Yellow Jackets as they closed the half on a 12-3 run with the lone bucket by the Panthers coming off of a floater in the lane by Jahsyni Knight, sending the teams to the locker rooms with Georgia Tech leading 32-28.
The two teams went back-and-forth to open the third quarter as Walsh opened the quarter with a triple and Judkins finished off the and one layup to cut their deficit to 43-40. The Yellow Jackets then extended their lead out to 12 as they used an 11-2 run to take control of the action. Judkins closed the scoring in the quarter for Pitt with a layup but the Yellow Jackets connected on a jumper at the buzzer of the quarter to take the 56-44 lead into the final frame.
Pitt continued to fight until the final whistle in the fourth quarter after the Yellow Jackets were able to extend their lead to 17, 63-46. The Panthers were able to respond with a 9-2 run to cut their deficit down to nine, 64-55, as Jasmine Whitney finished off a layup and a three pointer and Garven drilled a jumper. Pitt didn't allow a bucket for the final 6:43 of the game but couldn't draw any closer, falling 67-55.
Judkins led the way on Thursday as she notched the double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds across 28 minutes of work. Garven led the team in scoring as she went for 14 points and eight rebounds while Walsh scored in double figures for her second straight game with 10 points and six rebounds.
As a team, the Yellow Jackets were able to dominate the paint as they held the 32-18 edge down low while also forcing 18 Pitt turnovers and turning those chances into 20 points. The Panthers grabbed 17 offensive rebounds but could only turn those into four points in the loss.

- The Panthers will return home on Sunday afternoon for their 12th annual Pink The Petersen game as they welcome the Miami Hurricanes to the Petersen Events Center. Tip is set for 2:00 pm on Sunday with festivities kicking off at 12:30 pm on the concourse level of the arena. Fans in attendance will receive a free Pink t-shirt.
