PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team (9-16, 0-11 ACC) dropped another hard-fought game on Sunday afternoon to No. 25 Miami, 65-51, in the Panthers 12th annual Pink The Petersen game at the Petersen Events Center.
The Panthers wore pink jerseys and gave out free pink T-shirts to fans in support of breast cancer research. More than 100 breast cancer survivors were honored on the court at halftime in front of a crowd of 2,495. A portion of each ticket sold was donated to Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh.
"First off, I want to thank the community for such a great event," said head coach Lance White. "Just to see all the fans in this community come out and support this cause, really puts things into perspective for our team. We talk about in practice about fighting for possessions and how you have to fight through fatigue. It is hard but it is nothing compared to those strong brave women and what they have to fight on a day-to-day basis."
Pitt was led offensively by senior Danielle Garven who netted 13 points and six rebounds across 29 minutes while Jasmine Whitney finished off her all-around game with nine points, a season-high eight rebounds, six assists and two steals.
The Hurricanes were able to race out to a 7-1 lead early on before the Panthers got settled in and used a 6-0 run to tie the game, 9-9, at the first media timeout. A pair of contested layups by Cara Judkins tied the game for Pitt. The Panthers closed out the quarter on a 7-4 run as Cassidy Walsh finished off an old fashion three-point play with a jumper and free throw and Garven netted back-to-back jumpers to send the game to the second with Miami leading 19-18.
The Panthers struggled offensively in the second quarter as the Hurricanes were able to outscore Pitt 13-2 in the quarter to take the 32-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Pitt was able to open the third quarter with five of the first six points as Judkins finished off a layup and Walsh drilled a three-pointer to bring the Panthers within eight, 33-25. The Hurricanes then responded with a 12-3 run of their own to take over control of the game, 45-28, midway through the third. Judkins finished off a layup in the paint to close the scoring for the Panthers in the third as they went to the final frame trailing Miami 54-35.
Whitney opened the final quarter with a strong drive that resulted in a three-point play after she scored the bucket and was fouled. The Hurricanes responded and pushed their lead to 20, 62-42, but the Panthers didn't back down as Garven finished off a layup, Jaala Henry had a three-point play after a great feed from freshman Jahsyni Knight and Ismini Prapa nailed a three to cut the Pitt deficit to 12, 62-50, midway through the final quarter. The Panthers wouldn't' get any closer down the stretch as they fell 65-51 on Sunday.
Walsh finished off her game with eight points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal while Judkins netted eight points and four boards in the loss. Off the bench, Knight notched four points and two boards while Henry finished with three points, three rebounds and a career-high three blocks.
As a team, the Panthers were outscored inside the paint 30-18 for the game while forcing the Hurricanes to turn the ball over 14 times in the game. Pitt turned 14 offensive rebounds into 15 points while also winning the fast break scoring category 7-2.
