
Pitt Drops Both Games in First Day at UCF Knights Classic

Panthers Fall to Coastal Carolina and UCF
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped both of its games in the first day of the UCF Knights Classic, falling to Coastal Carolina, 5-0, and UCF, 9-1, Friday afternoon at UCF Softball Complex.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight earned the start for the Panthers in game one, allowing six hits and five earned runs while striking out six through seven innings of action.
Offensively, Pitt racked seven hits on the day from five different batters. Senior Gabrielle Fredericks and sophomore Brie Horrell led the Panthers with two hits apiece, while senior Marissa DeMatteo, sophomore Hunter Levesque and freshman Katlyn Pavlick added one hit each.
In game two, senior Taylor Rahach started on the rubber for the Panthers, allowing five earned runs while striking out one in 4.2 innings of action.
At the plate, Pitt recorded three hits in the contest. Pavlick went 1-for-1 while adding a walk, with Fredericks going 1-for-2 in the matchup. Junior Walker Barbee collected the Panthers' only RBI on the day, using a double to score senior Alexis Solak.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings of play before Coastal Carolina added its first run of the day following an RBI-single up the middle of the infield.
The Chanticleers then added three more runs in the fourth frame. Coastal Carolina scored its first run of the inning after a fielder's choice sent home a runner from third. An RBI-triple to left center tacked on another run before a sac fly to right field made it 4-0.
Coastal Carolina would add its fifth and final run of the game in the seventh, with a squeeze bunt scoring a runner from third.
The Panthers had their chances offensively, out-hitting the Chanticleers 7-6, but closed out the contest with eight runners left on base.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME TWO
The Knights opened up the scoring in the second inning, collecting three runs in the frame. An RBI-double scored UCF's first run of the game, with an infield single later scoring two more.
UCF tacked on another two in the fourth, scoring off a bases-loaded walk before making it 5-0 following an RBI-single through the left side of the field.
The Panthers scored their first run of the contest in the fifth frame, with Barbee roping a double to right center to score Solak from first.
The Knights immediately answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs to enact the run rule and end the game.

The Panthers will face both Coastal Carolina and UCF again on Saturday, with Pitt scheduled to face the Chanticleers at 12:30 p.m. and the Knights at 5:30 p.m.
