Panthers Drop Second Matchup to Huskers
RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped its ACC/Big Ten Challenge finale to Nebraska, 16-2, in a five-inning contest Sunday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.
The Panthers went winless on the weekend, falling to 1-8 on the season.
"This obviously wasn't how we were hoping to start the season, but we still have the time and the talent to turn it around," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "We were really pleased with the way Marissa [DeMatteo] stepped up this weekend. She provided us with quality at-bats while also playing stout defense, which is something we've been searching for from this team. Now we just need to head back home, regroup, and put our focus on this upcoming weekend."
Pitt utilized four pitchers on the mound in senior Taylor Rahach, junior Alexee Haynes, redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight and freshman Abby Edwards. The quartet combined to give up 13 earned runs while striking out two.
Sophomore Brie Horrell led the Panthers at the plate, going 1-for-1 on the day with a walk and a two-RBI long ball to center field. Senior Alexis Solak went 1-for-2 in the game, while fellow senior Marissa DeMatteo added a 1-for-3 showing at the plate.
SCORING SUMMARY
The Huskers posted runs in each inning they made an appearance at the plate, collecting three in the first frame, two in the second, nine in the third and two in the fourth.
Pitt added its first runs of the contest in the fifth frame, with sophomore Hunter Levesque earning a leadoff walk before Horrell's rocket over the center field wall sent both home.

The Panthers will travel to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the UCF Knights Classic starting Friday, Feb. 22.
