BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Pitt cross country teams closed out action at the 2019 ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday morning in Blacksburg, Va. The Pitt men claimed an 11th place finish while the women posted a 14th place finish at Virginia Tech's Buford Meredith Cross Country course.
"Of course this wasn't the outcome that we've trained for or expected from either of our teams but it's history now and can't be changed so we have to own it," said head coach Alonzo Webb. "As a program, we have to understand that we cannot continue to waste opportunities. In two weeks at the Mid-Atlantic regionals we'll have an opportunity to prove what kind of team we know we have."
On the men's side, the Panthers finished in 11th place in the 8K race with 315 points. Pitt moved up two spots this season after taking home 13th place a season ago at the ACC Championships.
Leading the Pitt men on Friday morning was junior Zach Lefever who notched a 38th place finish, crossing the finish line in 25:17.40. Lefever improved upon his 67th place finish in the event a season ago. Senior captain Nick Wolk came in 50th place in 25:25.00 while sophomore Evan Addison finished strong with a career-best 54th place finish in 25:28.00.
"From the start of the first race our top guy and captain, Nick Wolk, whom we expected to possibly contend for the win had his shoe stepped on in the first 400 meters of a five mile race and had to run the entire cross country race with one shoe in extremely cold, muddy and rocky conditions," said Webb. "To Nick's credit, he never quit on his teammates, although I'm certain it had to be in the back of his mind. When I talk about being blue collar, that proves it, it doesn't get more blue collar than that."
Up next were sophomore Tyler Rollins and junior Josh Higgins in 99th (26:43.10) and 109th (27:05.90) place, respectively. Nick Cardamone and Jackson Morton finished the race in 111th and 122nd place, respectively.
The Pitt women posted a team score of 410 in the 6K race to notch a 14th place finish.
Senior captain Sam Shields was the highest finisher for the Panthers on Friday as she took home 66th place in 22:23.30 while Devon Hoernlein notched an 96th place finish, crossing the finish line in 22:55.40. Two of the next three finishers for Pitt were freshmen as Lily Robertson took home 100th place in 23:00.10 and Corinne Firestone took 118th place in 23:39.50. Ally Brunton posted a career-best 105th place finish as she crossed the finish line in 23:07.00.
Pitt will return to action on Friday, November 15 as they head to Bethlehem, PA to compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals.
