Panthers, Seminoles to Face Off on ACC Network
PITTSBURGH – The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (14-1, 3-0 ACC) will play its fifth match against a top 25 opponent this season when it visits No. 23 Florida State (9-3, 3-0 ACC) Sunday at noon at Tully Gym in Tallahassee, Fla.

A WIN WOULD…
- Give the Panthers a 4-0 record in ACC play for the fourth consecutive season.
- Improve Pitt's record to 9-5 all-time against Florida State and 5-2 when playing in Tallahassee.
- Extend the Panthers' winning streak against the Seminoles to five matches. Pitt's last loss against Florida State came Oct. 16, 2016, on the road (3-1) The Panthers have won the last two meetings in Tallahassee (2017, 2018)
- Improve the Panthers' record to 32-2 when ranked inside the AVCA top 10 and 5-1 when ranked inside the top five.
STIFF COMPETITION
- The Panthers are 3-1 against teams ranked in the top 25 this season, with wins over No. 10 Oregon (Sept. 11), No. 16 Utah (Sept. 14) and No. 4 Penn State (Sept. 20).
- Pitt's lone loss to a ranked opponent this year came against No. 4 Penn State, 3-2 (Sept. 22).
LAST TIME OUT
- Junior right side hitter Chinaza Ndee led No. 4 Pitt with 12 kills as the Panthers earned their third consecutive sweep to open ACC play, topping Miami (6-5, 2-1) at the Knight Sports Complex Friday night.
- The Panthers ended the Hurricane's four-match win streak with the victory.
- Ndee hit .370 on the day, adding four blocks in the sweep. Redshirt senior outside hitter Stephanie Williams had a near double-double with nine kills and nine digs to go along with four assists. Senior middle Layne Van Buskirk and junior outside Kayla Lund had eight kills apiece, while sophomore middle Sabrina Starks contributed six.
- Freshman Lexis Akeo carried the setting load for Pitt with 29 assists, with seven digs and the first solo block of her career.
- The Panthers edged Miami in hitting percentage (.280-.192), kills (43-37), assists (40-36) and digs (35-34) while the Hurricanes had the upper hand in blocks (9.0-7.0).
HOLDING STEADY
- For the second consecutive week, the Panthers earned a No. 4 ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll, as announced Monday afternoon. The ranking is Pitt's highest in program history.
- The ranking marks the 16th week in program history that Pitt has landed among the top 10 programs in the NCAA, and the third week ever in the top five.
- The Panthers are 31-2 all-time when ranked inside the top 10, and 4-1 when ranked in the top five.
WILLIAMS NAMED CANDIDATE FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD®
- Pitt redshirt senior outside hitter Stephanie Williams has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award®. She is the lone candidate representing the Atlantic Coast Conference.
- To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
- An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
SCOUTING NO. 23 FLORIDA STATE
- No. 23 Florida State (9-3, 3-0) is riding a four-match win streak into Sunday's match against No. 4 Pitt. The Seminoles have opened up ACC play with three wins, over Duke (3-1), Wake Forest (3-0) and Virginia (3-1).
- Florida State's last loss came Sept. 17 at No. 11 Florida (3-0).
- The Seminoles are 4-0 when playing at Tully Gym this season.
- Florida State is 1-2 against ranked opponents this season, earning a sweep over No. 3 Minnesota in its second match of the year (Aug. 31).
- Payton Caffrey leads the Seminoles with 4.03 kills and 3.14 digs per set.
UP NEXT
- Pitt will stay on the road to face Syracuse (Oct. 11) and Boston College (Oct. 13).
