Pitt Takes Down Fourth Top 25 Opponent
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (15-1, 4-0 ACC) took down its fourth top 25 opponent of the season with a 3-1 win (25-15, 26-24, 14-25, 25-19) at No. 23 Florida State (9-4, 3-1 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Tully Gym.
Three Panthers posted double figures in the kill column, led by junior right side Chinaza Ndee with 15. Classmate Kayla Lund had a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs, and redshirt senior outside hitter Stephanie Williams had 13 kills to round out the trio.
Sophomore middle blocker Sabrina Starks paced Pitt with five blocks. Redshirt senior libero Hali Hillegas had a match-high 21 digs, while freshman setter Lexis Akeo led the Panthers with 46 assists.
Pitt had the upper hand in kills (58-33), assists (54-30), service aces (8-3) and digs (56-53), but the Seminoles had the advantage in blocks (18.0-9.0). The Panthers hit .158 for the match while holding Florida State to .134.
WITH THE WIN…
Set One: No. 4 Pitt 25, No. 23 Florida State 15
Following an early 2-2 tie, a 5-0 run gave the Panthers some momentum. Later, a 3-0 run extended Pitt's lead to 14-7. Strong showings by the outside hitters, including four kills apiece from Lund and Williams, helped the Panthers secure a double-figure win in the first frame. In total, Pitt out-hit the Seminoles, .433 to .130.
Set Two: No. 4 Pitt 26, No. 23 Florida State 24
The second set was tightly contested, with nine ties and three lead changes. Following a 7-0 Seminole run, the Panthers trailed 22-16, but responded with a resounding 10-2 run to take back the set with a 26-24 win.
Set Three: No. 23 Florida State 25, No. 4 Pitt 14
After four early ties, a 6-0 FSU run put the Seminoles ahead, 10-6. Florida State kept its momentum and ended the frame on a 9-1 run to hand Pitt its first set loss of ACC play, after the Panthers won their first 11 of the year.
Set Four: No. 4 Pitt 25, No 23 Florida State 19
Florida State used a 3-0 run to gain an early 8-7 lead, but the Panthers used a 10-3 run to gain control of the set, earning a 21-14 lead. The Seminoles came back within four after a 4-1 run (22-18), but Pitt was able to seal the deal with a 3-1 finish.
UP NEXT
Pitt will stay on the road to face Syracuse (Oct. 11) and Boston College (Oct. 13).
