PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team spent its first free weekend volunteering after the conclusion of Fall Ball with Urban Impact and the Miracle League.
"This past weekend was another opportunity for our Panthers to connect with our community," said Pitt head coach Mike Bell. "It was great to see the smiles on the faces of Urban Impact campers and Miracle Leaguers as they had the chance to work with our players through the game that we love so much. The experience to truly understand how they can impact others is unmatched for our players."
Pitt started the weekend of community service with Urban Impact Friday night across the Allegheny River at Cowley - Goettman Park. The Panthers led the campers through six different drill stations, teaching them various fundamentals of the game, such as base running, fielding and hitting. At the end, Pitt acted as umpires and various other roles in two scrimmages.
The following morning, Pitt headed over to the Miracle League of the South Hills. The Miracle League provides an opportunity for children with special needs to play baseball on a custom-designed field with a cushioned rubberized surface to help prevent injuries, wheelchair accessible dugouts and a completely flat surface to eliminate any barriers to wheel-chair bound or visually impaired players. Mitch Meyers and Billy Corcoran served as pitchers for one game each with Riley Wash behind the plate, and the rest of the Panthers helped in the field as buddies.
