Judkins' Career Night Not Enough As Panthers Fall To Virginia

PITTSBURGH – A strong third quarter push wasn't enough on Thursday night as the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (9-11, 0-6 ACC) dropped another tough ACC test against Virginia, 74-57 inside the Petersen Events Center.
"This one for me, hurts," stated head coach Lance White. "Watching them on film and in person even, they're a team that I feel like we can play with and we just didn't make enough plays that we needed to in crucial situations. I thought we started the game pretty flat and then ramped it up and I thought we had a pretty good third quarter and then to let up on the gas again was really disappointing."
The Panthers were paced offensively by a pair of post players on Thursday night as Danielle Garven went to work in the second half and posted 19 points and five assists on 9-for-12 from the floor while sophomore center Cara Judkins finished off her strong night with a career-high 18 points, three rebounds and two blocks while going 8-for-14 from the floor.
Both teams started slow offensively on Thursday night as the Cavaliers opened the game with the first four points before Judkins finished off a layup and Garven drilled a jumper to send the game to the first media timeout with Virginia leading 6-4. A Cassidy Walsh triple was the lone field goal over the final 16 shots of the quarter as the Cavaliers took the 9-7 lead into the second quarter.
The Cavaliers came out strong in the second quarter but Walsh nailed a triple and Judkins finished off her first layup of the second quarter to cut the Virginia lead to 18-14 a couple minutes into the quarter. The Cavaliers then used a 10-2 run to take the 28-16 lead over the Panthers with three minutes to go in the opening half. Judkins scored four of the final five points for Pitt to end the half with 10 as Virginia went to the locker room with the 31-21 lead.
After the Cavaliers built up a 11-point lead, 37-26, early on in the third quarter, the Panthers were able to go on a 11-0 run that was sparked by a pair of Kauai Bradley triples to force Virginia to take a timeout with the scored tied, 37-37. The Cavaliers responded quickly with a 10-2 run to take the 47-39 lead that forced a Pitt timeout. Judkins and Garven finished the scoring for the Panthers in the third quarter as the Cavaliers took the 50-32 lead into the final quarter.
The Panthers continued to fight in the fourth quarter as a Garven runner in the lane cut the Cavaliers lead down to six, 57-51, but Virginia responded and used a 14-0 run to put the game out of reach down the stretch. A pair of and one layups by Kyla Nelson and Garven finished the scoring for the Panthers as they fell 74-57 in front of the home fans.
Bradley finished off her night with 10 points and seven rebounds while Walsh tied a career-high with eight rebounds, six points, three assists and two steals in the loss.
As a team, Pitt won the rebounding battle 34-32 and also the battle of paint scoring as they out-scored the Cavaliers 34-24 inside. Virginia forced 17 Pitt turnovers and turned those chances into 15 points as they collected their second ACC win of the season.
