
Panthers Hang Tough In Second Half But Fall At #4 Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KY – The Pitt women's basketball team (9-12, 0-7 ACC) held the #4 Louisville Cardinals to a season-low 29 second half points on Sunday afternoon inside the KFC YUM! Center but they weren't able to pull the road upset as they fell 70-42. The Panthers defense held the high-octane Cardinals attack to 17 points under their season average at home this season.
Sophomore Kyla Nelson led the Panthers in scoring on Sunday as she tied a career-high with 12 points and three rebounds off the bench while going 4-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-4 from behind the arc. Senior Kauai Bradley scored in double figures for the third straight game as she finished with 11 points and six rebounds across 33 minutes of work while Jaala Henry made a huge impact in the second half grabbing a career-high nine rebounds, three points and two steals in the loss.
Senior Danielle Garven had a strong start for the Panthers on Sunday as she was able to score the first four Pitt points and the defense held the Cardinals to just 3-for-9 shooting early on as #4 Louisville held the 8-4 edge at the first media timeout. Louisville then took over control of the quarter after the media timeout as they out-scored Pitt 15-2 as Nelson nailed a pair of free throws for the final points in the quarter.
The Cardinals were able to open the game up in the second quarter as they opened the quarter on a 16-0 run to take a dominant 39-6 lead. Bradley found her stroke across the final couple minutes as she knocked down back-to-back triples as Pitt went to the locker room training #4 Louisville, 41-12.
The Panthers were able to come out of the locker room with a sense of urgency as they were able to out-score the Cardinals 8-2 as Cara Judkins finished off a layup in traffic and Bradley finished off an and one layup to cut the Louisville lead down to 47-24. Pitt then closed out the quarter with a layup from Henry and a Jahsyni Knight free throw to close out the third trailing 55-27.
Pitt continued to come after the Cardinals in the fourth quarter as they were able to open the final frame on a 10-2 run behind a pair of Knight steals and five points from Nelson. The Cardinals were able to outscore the Panthers 11-5 down the stretch as Ismini Prapa and Nelson closed out the scoring in the 70-42 road loss for Pitt.
Garven finished off her game with eight points on 3-for-6 from the floor while Knight brought some good energy off the bench in the second half and finished with three points, a career-high five assists and two steals across 16 minutes. Prapa finished her game playing a career-high 24 minutes while netting two points and grabbing two offensive rebounds.
As a team, Louisville shot 40.4% from the floor while the Panthers were limited to just 28.3% from the floor and 19.0% from behind the arc. Pitt was also out-rebounded 48-31 for the game as the Cardinals were able to score 19 second chance points in the win.
