Track & Field Travels To The Penn State National Open This Weekend

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt track and field teams will return to action this weekend as they take part in the two-day Penn State National Open inside the Ashenfelter Indoor Track. The meet will run from Friday until Saturday with events beginning at 4:00 pm on Friday afternoon.

- Team competing this weekend are Penn State, West Virginia, Maryland, Towson, East Carolina, Rider, Army, Youngstown State, Ashland, Penn, St. Joseph's, Cornell, Duquesne, La Salle, Binghamton, UMBC, Norfolk State, Coppin State, Monmouth, Howard, Toronto, Georgetown, Shippensburg, Saint Francis, Vermont and Richmond.
- The meet will begin on Friday evening at 4:00 pm with the women's weight throw, the men's and women's pole vault and the mixed 1 mile run on the track.
- Friday action will conclude with the men's 60 meter dash final at 8:40 pm.
- Saturday will begin at 10:50 am with the women's 400m dash.
- Saturday's competition will end around 5:25 pm with the men's 4x400m relay final.
- The Panthers competed in the Hokie Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech.
- Pitt collected one individual champion and one relay champion on the weekend.
- Junior Dante' Watson earned the win in the 600m dash as he finished in 1:19.55 while Drew Glick took home third place and Matt Wilson claimed seventh place in the same race.
- The women's 4x400m relay quartet of Flora Ahiarakwe, Nikki Scherer, Breanna Phillips and Sydni Townsend picked up the win, finishing in a season-best time of 3:43.92.
- Townsend also posted the second-best time in school history in the 600m dash, finishing in a season-best 1:31.54.
- Two Panthers hit ACC qualifying standards as Kollin Smith recorded a long jump of 7.22m to take home sixth place while Taylor Middleton posted a leap of 6.11m in the long jump.
- On the men's side six other Panthers posted top-five finishes including Nate Sloan, Glick and Watson (800m), Tyler Rollins (5000m), Zach Lefever (3000m) and Greg Lauray (high jump).
- On the women's side, three other athletes posted top-10 finishes including Miranda Salvo (800m/Mile), Sarah Frick (5000m), and Ahiarakwe (400m).
- After a strong showing last week at the Hokie Invitational, freshman Sydni Townsend was named Pitt female Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career.
- Townsend posted a third place finish in the 600m dash at the Hokie Invitational with a time of 1:31.54, the second fastest time in school history.
- She then ran the anchor leg of the Panthers 4x400m relay team that collected the win in a season-best time of 3:43.92.
- The Panthers will return to the track next weekend as they head to Ann Arbor, MI for the Power Five Invitational hosted by Michigan. The Meet will begin on Friday, Feb. 1 and run through Saturday, Feb. 2.
