GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Pitt men's swimming team will compete at the 2018 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships over the next four days at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, hoping to make more program history after the Panthers' women's squad set 11 school records at last week's meet.
After freshman diver Noah Marble tallied 14 team points for Pitt during the diving sessions last week in Greensboro, the Panthers are aiming to significantly add to that tally beginning on Wednesday when the men's swimming portion of the conference championships begin with the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays.
"This should be another fun week of swimming," Pitt head coach John Hargis said. "Our men have the opportunity to do some great things at this meet, which is always incredibly competitive and gets faster every single year. We're expecting to see several school records set over the next few days."
Pitt features one of the youngest men's rosters in the country, with Boris Kulizhnikov the only senior and John Fauteux, Brian Lovasik and Aaron Sett the only juniors for the Panthers.
However, the Panthers do return seven individual scorers from last year's ACC Championships, when the Pitt men combined to set a program record with 513 team points scored at the conference meet.
Kulizhnikov (22nd in the 100 breast), Lovasik (15th in the 200 free, 19th in the 500 free) and Sett (8th in the 500 free, 9th in the 1650 free) were all contributors for Pitt at ACCs last season, and those upperclassmen aim to lead by example again this time around.
Now-sophomores Samy Helmbacher (18th in the 400 IM), Brian Ramsey (18th in the 100 breast), Luke Smutny (20th in the 200 fly and 500 free) and Eben Vorster (10th in the 200 fly, 18th in the 200 free) all had strong ACC debuts last year and could be poised for breakout meets this week in Greensboro.
Also highlighting Pitt's roster, Hungarian freshmen Armin Remenyi and Bence Szucsik have the potential to score big in their preferred events, while Pennsylvania-native first-years Ellis Cannon, Ryan Schonbachler and Jason Young will also make their debuts at the ACC Championships.
The final three evening sessions, featuring the individual championship races of all men's swimming events at the ACC Championships, can be viewed on the ACC Network Extra live online and via the WatchESPN app.
