GREENSBORO, N.C.—Pitt sophomore and Mt. Lebanon's own Brian Ramsey highlighted the Panthers' efforts on the final day of the 2018 ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, setting a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke.
After finishing 12th in the ACC 100-yard breaststroke on Friday evening, Ramsey crushed his own personal record in the 200 breast Saturday morning with a swim of 1:56.04 to post a new Pitt-best time, besting the previous record of 1:56.81 held by Luke Nosbisch since 2014. The sophomore would go on to also place 12th in the ACC 200 breast with a finals time of 1:57.02.
"We broke six school records this week and saw some excellent swimming," Pitt head coach John Hargis said at the conclusion of the meet. "There was some unbelievable individual performances, from Samy Helmbacher setting three school records to Brian Ramsey having the meet of his life and so much more. As a whole, we're still very young and learning how to compete at this level. We have high expectations, and we know we need to get a lot better."
Pitt senior Boris Kulizhnikov also had a strong finals performance in the 200 breast, winning the C final to take 17th place with a time of 1:56.15—just off the new school record that Ramsey posted in the morning session.
"I can't say enough about Boris today," Hargis added of Kulizhnikov, the lone senior on the Pitt men's swimming & diving roster. "To end his career with a best time of about two seconds was amazing to watch. He's been a great leader for our program, and we were all excited to see him have incredible success in his final race."
Also earning second swims on Saturday for the Panthers, sophomores Luke Smutny (14th, 1:44.82) and Eben Vorster (16th, 1:46.86) qualified for the consolation final in the 100-yard butterfly, while Bence Szucsik placed 20th in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:44.89.
The Pitt 400-yard freestyle relay team of Brian Lovasik, Samy Helmbacher, Armin Remenyi and John Fauteux concluded the meet by placing ninth in the event with a time of 2:56.04 that just missed breaking the Panthers' all-time best mark in the event that has stood since 2002.
Pitt finished the 2018 ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships in 10th place with 324 points, matching last season's team finish at one of college swimming's top conference meets.
Also swimming for the Panthers Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center were Brian Lovasik (32nd, 44.25), John Fauteux (42nd, 44.95), Armin Remenyi (46th, 45.11), Ellis Cannon (49th, 45.43) and Jason Young (56th, 46.83) in the 100 free; Samy Helmbacher (27th, 1:59.53) in the 200 breast; and Ryan Schonbachler (31st, 15:36.19) and Aaron Sett (33rd, 15:39.43) in the 1,650 freestyle mile.
