
Laymon, Brechwald Earn Titles at WVU Tri-Meet

Panthers Post 195.250 En Route To Third Place Finish.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Haley Brechwald and senior Taylor Laymon earned individual titles as the University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team posted a 195.250 en route to a third place finish in its tri-meet against West Virginia and Maryland Sunday afternoon at WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers placed first in the meet with a 196.225, followed by the Terrapins at 195.825 and the Panthers with a 195.250.
Pitt's best event of the day was floor, where they earned a season-high team score of 49.150. The Panthers also posted a 48.750 on both vault and beam, followed by a 48.600 on bars.
"We had some adversity thrown at us today and I'm really proud of how we handled ourselves," said head coach Samantha Snider. "We stayed focused and showed fight on every event. This was a good road score that we can definitely build upon next week."
Individually, two Panther gymnasts earned event titles in the meet. Brechwald earned an individual title on bars after tying for the top spot with a 9.875. Laymon earned her title on beam, tying for the top score in the event with a 9.875.
BEAM
The Panthers started the afternoon on beam, where Laymon earned her individual title with a career-high 9.875. Following Laymon was junior Lucy Brett with a 9.800 in the event. Senior Catie Conrad posted a 9.775, followed by sophomore Lucy Jones with a 9.750.
Maryland held the top spot after the first rotation, posting a 49.100. WVU trailed closely behind at 49.075, followed by Pitt with a 48.750.
FLOOR
Pitt moved to floor for the second rotation, where it earned a season-high score of 49.150 in the event. Brechwald led the team with a season-high 9.900, the Panthers first 9.900 of the season on floor. Juniors Kensleigh Owens and Charli Spivey both tied their career-highs in the event, with each posting a 9.825. Sophomore Alecia Petrikis tied her season-high with a 9.800, while freshman Jordan Ceccarini earned a new season-high with her mark of 9.800. Conrad rounded out the group with a 9.750 in the event.
After two rotations, the Terrapins held onto the top spot with a 98.050. The Panthers moved into second place with a 97.900, while the Mountaineers trailed closely behind at 97.850.
VAULT
Next up for the Panthers was vault. Brechwald again earned the top score on the team, this time posting a season-high tying 9.850. Petrikis followed Brechwald with a 9.800, with Conrad closely behind with a season-high tying 9.775.
Heading into the last rotation, Maryland still had control, leading the pack with a mark of 147.025. West Virginia moved back into second place, earning a 146.900, followed by Pitt with a 146.650.
BARS
Pitt finished the day on bars, where Brechwald earned an individual title with a season-high tying score of 9.875. Brett and Jones both earned scores of 9.825 in the event, with the mark tying a career-high for Jones. Conrad followed the pair with her third 9.775 mark of the day.
