EVANSTON – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team earned a hard fought road win on Thursday night at Northwestern in the ACC/B1G Challenge inside Welsh-Ryan Arena by the score of 52-49. The stingy Panthers defense held the Wildcats to just 26.3% shooting from the floor while forcing 15 turnovers.
The win improves the Panthers record to 5-4 on the season as they collected their third straight win, all away from home. The loss for the Wildcats was the first of the season for them as they fall to 5-1.
"I was really proud of our team tonight," stated head coach Lance White. "They showed great poise and toughness to earn a quality win against a very good basketball team. Our ability to force them to take hard shots and our ability to rebound the basketball was the difference in the game."
Leading by three with just over a minute left, the Panthers defense stood strong and forced a pair of misses from three point land from the Wildcats to secure the win. Jasmine Whitney and Kyla Nelson knocked down free throws in the final 30 seconds as Pitt notched the 52-49 win.
Senior Cassidy Walsh led the Panthers with a team-high 11 points and four rebounds while knocking down three triples. Whitney and Nelson each scored in double figures as they went for 10 points each while Kauai Bradley had a great effort as she netted seven points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the win.
After a slow start offensively by both teams, the Panthers were able to get out to the 10-6 lead with 4:36 left in the opening frame as Kyla Nelson and Cassidy Walsh both drained triples and Kauai Bradley nailed a jumper to force a Northwestern timeout. The Wildcats controlled the final six minutes of the first quarter as they went on a 6-0 run to take the 12-10 lead through 10 minutes of action.
The second quarter began just like the first as both defenses forced tough contested shots as neither side was able to score through three minutes. The Wildcats opened the scoring with a jumper to take the four point lead but the Panthers responded with seven straight to take the 17-14 lead as Bradley had a steal and layup, Walsh drained a triple and Kalista Walters finished off a layup. The stingy Pitt defense held the potent Wildcats down the stretch of the second quarter to take the game to halftime with the Panthers leading 19-18.
The Panthers had a great start to the third quarter as they went on a quick 7-0 run to take the 26-18 lead behind a Nelson steal and layup, a Cara Judkins layup and another Walsh three. The Wildcats responded with a 5-0 run before Jahsyni Knight finished off a layup and free throw as the Panthers went into the final quarter leading 30-27.
Pitt was able to open up the final frame on a 7-2 run sparked by five points from senior Danielle Garven to extend the lead to 37-29. Nelson hit a three and Judkins sank a pair of free throws to give the Panthers the 47-39 lead before the Wildcats came right back with five straight to cut the lead to 47-44. The defense played tough across the final two minutes to secure the win for the Panthers.
As a team, the Panthers shot 35.3% from the floor while they held the Wildcats to just 26.3% overall and 14.3% from behind the arc. Pitt was able to turn 15 turnovers into 14 points while also outscoring Northwestern 12-5 in the fast break.
The Panthers will return home on Wednesday, December 5 as they welcome Fordham to the Petersen Events Center for a non-conference battle. The game against the Rams will tip at 7:00 pm and is the first of four straight home games for Pitt.
