Pitt uses stingy defense in third quarter to sneak past Fordham On Wednesday
PITTSBURGH – Behind some tough defense in the second half, the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team notched their fourth straight win on Wednesday night as they defeated the Fordham Rams inside the Petersen Events Center by the score of 65-62. Three Panthers scored in double figures led by Jasmine Whitney who netted a season-high 18 points in the win.
With the win, the Panthers improved to 6-4 on the season as they have posted four straight wins. The loss drops the Rams record to 5-5 on the year.
"I'm extremely excited that we were able to pull out the win tonight," stated head coach Lance White. "We have talked all year about a mentality—a mentality that we are going to pull things out and have a four-quarter mentality. I'm so excited that the last two games have been close and we have fought our guts out to get wins. I'm really proud of their approach and the way they fought through to keep us in the game tonight, and then come out and win it."
Whitney finished off her impressive game with a team-high 18 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals while connecting on 6-for-9 from the floor. Senior Danielle Garven had her biggest game of the season as she went for 16 points, five rebounds and two assists while going 8-for-13 from the floor. Off the bench, Kauai Bradley continued her strong play as she finished with a season-high 13 points, five rebounds and two steals across 34 minutes of work.
Trailing by one, 60-59, with 2:37 left in the game the Panthers called a timeout that changed the complexion of the game. Out of the timeout, Pitt drew up a perfect play as Garven found Cara Judkins for the layup to take the 61-60 lead. The Pitt defense forced another missed shot by the Rams and Whitney responded with her biggest bucket of the season and she drove the lane and finished a layup after some contact to give the Panthers the 63-60 lead with 27 seconds left. The Rams hit a shot to bring the game within one again but Whitney calmly drained a pair of free throws to seal the win for the Panthers, 65-62.
The Panthers had a strong start offensively as they raced out to the 12-5 lead just over three minutes into the first quarter as Garven and Judkins connected on layups before Cassidy Walsh netted her first triple of the game. The Rams then responded with a 14-2 run to close out the quarter with the 19-14 lead as Ismini Prapa was the lone Pitt player to score as she netted a jumper in the lane.
After Bradley connected on her first of two triples of the quarter early in the second, the Rams were able to knock down back-to-back three-pointers to extend their lead out to 27-19. The Panthers had a nice response over the next minute of play as Garven netted back-to-back buckets and Whitney drilled an off-balance jumper to cut the lead down to four, 29-25. After some back-and-forth play, Jaala Henry netted a hook shot to cut into the Fordham lead but the Rams were able to end the quarter with a triple as they took the 39-34 lead into the locker room at half.
The Panthers were able to come out of the locker room strong in the opening minutes of the second half as Whitney drilled a jumper and Bradley finished off a fast break layup to cut the Fordham lead to one, 39-38. The Rams were able to come right back and went on an 8-0 run to push their lead out to 47-38 but the Panthers defense responded in a huge way. Over the final seven minutes of the third quarter, the Panthers outscored the Rams 11-0 as the defense forced 11 straight misses. Pitt was able to take the 49-47 lead into the final frame as Judkins netted a hook shot to close out the scoring in the third.
Garven was able to extend the Panthers lead out to 57-52 midway through the final quarter as she netted back-to-back layups. The Rams came right back, tying the score at 57 all before regaining the one point lead, 60-59, with just over two minutes left. The Panthers were able to finish the game strong as they collected their fourth straight win.
As a team, the Panthers were able to outshoot the Rams 48.1% to 41.0% as they improved to 6-0 on the season when shooting a higher percentage from the floor than their opponent. The Panthers were also able to outscore Fordham inside the paint, 28-20, while the Rams held the narrow 32-31 edge on the boards.
The Panthers will stay at home on Saturday afternoon as they welcome the West Virginia Mountaineers to the Petersen Events Center for a non-conference battle. Tip is set for 3:00 pm on Saturday.
