Grimm’s Addition Rounds Out the 2019 Pitt Softball Coaching Staff
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh head softball coach Jodi Hermanek announced Friday the hiring of Maddy Grimm as a volunteer assistant coach on the softball staff.
Grimm's addition will complete the coaching staff for the 2019 season, as Hermanek recently announced the hiring of assistant coaches Jillian Van Wagnen and Brock Van Faussien.
"It's an honor for our staff to add Maddy to the family," said Hermanek. "Grimm is a fun, experienced and professional talent that connected immediately with the integrity of our staff. We are excited to have her work specifically with our infield and assist with defense and hitting.
"As a young coach, and current professional softball athlete, Maddy is a walking example for our student-athletes to relate to and grow from."
Grimm currently spends her summers playing for Moh-BEEL! USA of the American Softball Association (ASBA), and joins the Pitt staff following a one-year stint at Ashland University as an assistant coach.
Prior to joining the Ashland softball staff, Grimm spent the summer with the Akron Racers after being selected No. 23 overall in the 2017 National Pro Fastpitch Draft following a standout career at Kent State.
"I'm thrilled to be able to work with this coaching staff at Pitt," said Grimm. "After competing against Herm and Jillian for four years in the MAC, I know the kind of energy they bring to the game and I'm excited to be submerged in their passion for teaching and creating a championship culture. As a young coach, I'm also excited to learn from and assist with Brock, considering his experience at a high caliber program. We have a lot of specialties to offer as a staff, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that translates to our performance in the ACC."
During her time with the Golden Flashes, Grimm received numerous accolades, both on and off the field. She was a three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Mideast Region First Team member and was named to the NFCA All-Mideast Region Third Team in just her freshman season. Grimm was also a three-time All-MAC First Team honoree, two-time MAC All-Tournament Team member and the 2017 MAC Player of the Year.
Academically, Grimm was a three-time Academic All-MAC recipient, two-time MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete honoree and the 2017 Janet Bachna Award winner, which is presented to a student-athlete who displays athletic, academic and leadership excellence.
During her four years with Kent State, Grimm recorded a .330 batting average, .455 on-base percentage, and .760 slugging percentage to go along with 198 hits, 192 RBIs, 172 runs, 69 home runs and 43 doubles. She currently ranks first in program history in slugging percentage, runs, RBIs and home runs while ranking second in on-base percentage and doubles, fourth in hits and fifth in batting average.
A Stahlstown, Pa., native, Grimm earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Kent State.
