Panthers to Close Homestand against Vikings Monday Night
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team will close its homestand when it hosts Cleveland State Monday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt recorded a 2-1 double overtime victory against Clemson Friday, Oct. 5 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
- Sophomore Edward Kizza scored both goals for the Panthers in the win. Kizza opened up his offensive attack early, netting his first goal in the 10th minute off an assist from freshman Jackson Walti. Clemson then knotted the game at one apiece in the 38th minute before Kizza eventually added his second goal of the match after a feed from senior Javi Perez, giving Pitt the 2-1 win in double overtime.
- Kizza led the team with three shots and two scores, followed by Perez and sophomores Marcony Pimentel and Alexander Dexter with two shots apiece. Seniors Robby Dambrot and Tom Moxham and sophomore Jose Luis Sena Arbona also added one shot each in the match.
SURVEYING THE STATS
- Seven different Panthers have scored a goal so far this season in Dambrot, Kizza, Perez, Pimentel, Sena Arbona, Walti and redshirt freshman Fiorre Mane.
- Kizza leads the team with eight scores, followed by Perez and Pimentel with two. Dambrot, Mane, Sena Arbona and Walti have each netted one goal apiece.
- Pitt has also seen nine players record assists on the season.
- Dexter leads the squad with three assists, followed by Perez and Pimentel with two. Dambrot, Sena Arbona, Walti and freshmen Nyk Sessock, Alec Townsend and Chandler Vaughn have all added one helper each.
SIZING UP THE 2018 SLATE
- Pitt faces some tough competition in the 2018 season, with a schedule that includes 12 NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago.
- In 11 matches, the Panthers have already faced six ranked opponents this season in then-ranked No. 25 Colgate, No. 4 Akron, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 6 Louisville, No. 12 NC State and No. 11 Virginia.
- Of Pitt's remaining six matches, three teams are currently ranked in the top 25 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
KIZZA COMMANDING ATTENTION
- Coming off a freshman campaign in which he scored four goals, Kizza has already notched eight goals through 11 games this season.
- The Kampala, Uganda, native currently leads the team in shots (27), shots on goal (18), points (16) and goals (eight).
- The sophomore currently ranks 29th in the nation in goals and fourth in the ACC in the same category, while ranking ninth in the nation in shot accuracy (.667) and first in the conference.
- Kizza netted three goals in Pitt's second match of the season against Delaware Monday, Aug. 27, making him just the 20th player in program history to record a hat trick.
- The sophomore's goal in the opening minutes of the contest was also the quickest goal to start a game in school history, coming just 1:40 into the match and besting the previous record of 1:58 set in 2006.
- Kizza scored both of Pitt's goals in a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win against Clemson Friday, Oct. 5 at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The sophomore scored his first goal in the 10th minute of the match before closing the game with a score from the middle of the box in the 102nd minute.
THE SERIES – CLEVELAND STATE
- The Panthers and Vikings have met 17 times in a series that dates back to 1969, with Cleveland State owning a slight 7-6-4 all-time series edge.
- Most recently, Cleveland State earned a 1-0 victory over Pitt Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio.
- The Panthers strung together five consecutive wins against the Vikings from 1997 to 2002, but are currently enduring a four game losing streak to Cleveland State.
- Head coach Jay Vidovich owns a 2-1-0 all-time record against the Vikings during his time at both Wake Forest and Pitt.
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
- Cleveland State enters Monday's match with a 3-5-1 [1-2-1 Horizon] record, most recently earning a 2-0 win over Ohio State Friday, Oct. 5 in Columbus, Ohio.
- The Vikings are led by head coach Kirk Harwat, who is in his second season with the program. Harwat has compiled a 10-15-3 (.411) record during his time at Cleveland State.
- Through nine games, juniors Vlade Jandric and Gabe Pewu lead the team with three goals apiece. Four other players have also added one goal each for the Vikings.
- In goal, freshman keeper Alex Gyerman has started six matches for Cleveland State, recording 23 saves while allowing seven goals.
