Kizza Records Second Hat Trick of Season
The loss drops Pitt to 6-6-0 [2-3-0 ACC] on the season, with five of its losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents. The win improves the Vikings to 4-5-1 [1-2-1 Horizon] on the year.
Sophomore Edward Kizza tallied his second hat trick of the season, but it ultimately wasn't enough as the Panthers were forced to play a man down following a red card in the 34th minute.
Kizza has now collected 11 goals on the season, tying him with Joe Luxbacher (1971) for the 10th most goals in single-season program history.
"We were able to make and create opportunities until the very last second," said head coach Jay Vidovich after being asked about the team's response following the red card. "We found chances all the way through and we found goals when we were a man down. We're capable of pushing on that and scoring a man down and that's a positive."
Kizza opened the match with a goal in the ninth minute, lofting the ball over the keepers head after receiving a pass from sophomore Jose Luis Sena Arbona. The Vikings then answered the Panthers goal with a score of their own in the 17th minute, knotting the match at one apiece. In the 28th minute, Kizza added his second goal of the night after senior Tom Moxham found him on a cross from the left side of the field. Pitt went into the break a man down following its red card in the 34th minute, but still held on to a 2-1 lead and 10-4 advantage in shots.
In the second half, Cleveland State once again tied the game after finding the back of the net in the 67th minute. The Vikings then took their first lead of the night following a score in the 77th minute. The Panthers would answer just three minutes later, with Kizza earning his hat trick after heading in a cross from redshirt senior Robby Dambrot. With things knotted a three apiece, Cleveland State would go on to collect the final goal of the match after heading in the game-winner out of a corner kick.
Up next, the Panthers will travel to Blacksburg, Va., to face ACC opponent Virginia Tech Friday night at 7 p.m.
