Panthers to Face Mountaineers in 49th Edition of Backyard Brawl
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team will play its final road match of the season against West Virginia Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt dropped its match to No. 14 Duke, 3-1, Friday, Oct. 19 in Durham, N.C.
- Duke used a three-goal first half to separate itself from the Panthers early. Pitt notched a goal of its own in the second half of play, but was unable to catch the Blue Devils before time expired.
- Sophomore Edward Kizza collected his 13th goal of the season in the 58th minute after receiving a pass from freshman Rodrigo Almeida.
- Kizza, senior Javi Perez, sophomore Alexander Dexter and redshirt freshman Fiorre Mane each recorded two shots apiece, with senior Robby Dambrot adding one shot in the match.
SURVEYING THE STATS
- Eight different Panthers have scored a goal this season in Dambrot, Dexter, Kizza, Mane, Perez, sophomores Marcony Pimentel and Jose Luis Sena Arbona and freshman Jackson Walti.
- Kizza leads the team with 13 goals, followed by Perez with four and Pimentel with two. Dambrot, Dexter, Mane, Sena Arbona and Walti have each netted one goal apiece.
- Pitt has also seen 11 players record assists on the season.
- Dexter leads the squad with four assists, followed by Perez with three and Dambrot, Pimentel and Sena Arbona with two. Almeida, Walti, senior Tom Moxham and freshmen Nyk Sessock, Alec Townsend and Chandler Vaughn have all added one helper each.
SIZING UP THE 2018 SLATE
- Pitt faces some tough competition in the 2018 season, with a schedule that includes 12 NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago.
- In 15 matches, the Panthers have faced seven ranked opponents in then-ranked No. 25 Colgate, No. 4 Akron, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 6 Louisville, No. 12 NC State, No. 11 Virginia and No. 14 Duke.
- Of Pitt's remaining two matches, one team is currently ranked in the top 25 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll in No. 16 Notre Dame.
KIZZA COMMANDING ATTENTION
- Coming off a freshman campaign in which he scored four goals, Kizza has notched 13 goals through 15 games this season.
- Kizza currently ranks sixth in program history for single-season goals. No Pitt player had previously cracked the top-10 in single-season goals since 1977.
- The Kampala, Uganda, native currently leads the team in shots (38), points (26), shots on goal (25) and goals (13).
- As of Oct. 21, the sophomore ranks fourth in the nation and first in the ACC in total goals (13), seventh in the nation and first in the ACC in shot accuracy (.658) and 10th in the nation and tied for first in the ACC in total points (26).
- Kizza netted three goals in Pitt's second match of the season against Delaware Monday, Aug. 27, making him just the 20th player in program history to record a hat trick.
- The sophomore's goal in the opening minutes of the contest was also the quickest goal to start a game in school history, coming just 1:40 into the match and besting the previous record of 1:58 set in 2006.
- Kizza scored both of Pitt's goals in a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win against Clemson Friday, Oct. 5 at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The sophomore scored his first goal in the 10th minute of the match before closing the game with a score from the middle of the box in the 102nd minute.
- Kizza recorded his second hat trick of the season against Cleveland State Monday, Oct. 8 at Ambrose Urbanic Field, netting two goals in the first half and one in the second.
THE SERIES – WEST VIRGINIA
- In a series that dates back to 1962, the Mountaineers hold a 33-10-5 all-time record against the Panthers.
- Most recently, Pitt dominated West Virginia in last year's matchup, earning a 7-0 decision over the Mountaineers Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
- The victory was Pitt's first over West Virginia since 2000, while its seven-goal win margin was the highest in program history against the Mountaineers and highest against any team since 2013.
- Head coach Jay Vidovich owns a perfect 3-0-0 mark against WVU from his time at both Wake Forest and Pitt.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
- West Virginia enters Tuesday's match with a 10-5-0 [3-0-0 MAC] record, most recently earning a 5-1 victory over SIU Edwardsville Saturday, Oct. 20 in Morgantown, W.Va.
- The Mountaineers are led by head coach Marlon LeBlanc, who is in his 13th season with the program. LeBlanc has compiled a 124-89-32 (.571) record with West Virginia and a 128-92-32 (.571) career record.
- Offensively, the Mountaineers are led by junior Pascal Derwaritsch, who has scored five goals on the season. Redshirt senior Joey Piatczyc and junior Ryan Kellogg have both collected four goals on the year, with senior Rushawn Larmond and junior Ethan Shim adding three scores apiece. Five other players have also scored at least one goal for the Mountaineers.
- In goal, sophomore Steven Tekesky has started all 15 matches for West Virginia, recording five shutouts while collecting 64 saves and allowing 15 goals.
