Panthers Drop Final Road Match of Season to Mountaineers
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team dropped its final road match of the regular season to West Virginia, 2-1, Tuesday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The loss drops Pitt to 7-9-0 [2-5-0 ACC] on the season, with six of its losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents. The win improves the Mountaineers to 11-5-0 [3-0-0 MAC] on the year.
West Virginia got on the board first, finding the back of the net in the 16th minute. The Mountaineers then earned a two goal lead after scoring again in the 49th minute. The Panthers would quickly respond, with sophomore Alexander Dexter scoring off an assist from Rodrigo Almeida in the 50th minute, but were unable to find an equalizer before time expired.
"Right now we're missing [Edward] Kizza, and we're missing Chandler [Vaughn], and we're missing certain players that are working to come back," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "We just weren't able to get the result or the performance we wanted."
The match opened with a patient approach from both teams before West Virginia found the back of the net on its first shot of the game. After the first 45 minutes of play, the Mountaineers held a slight 3-2 advantage in shots and a 2-1 lead in corners.
The second half of play featured an action-packed opening five minutes. West Virginia would take a two goal lead in the 49th minute after scoring on a free kick just outside of the box. Pitt would answer quickly, with Dexter netting a goal just 30 seconds later to put the score at 2-1. The Panthers would find a couple quality opportunities following the score, but were unable to even the match before time expired.
Dexter led the team with two shots, followed by seniors Tom Moxham and Shane Wiedt and sophomore Marcony Pimentel with one shot apiece.
In goal, freshman keeper Johan Penaranda collected three saves while surrendering two goals in 90 minutes of action.
Up next, the Panthers will close their regular season as they host No. 23 Notre Dame for Senior Night Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
