PITTSBURGH - Pitt Men's Soccer opened the 2026 season falling 2-1 to Maryland on Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Maryland struck first in the 12th minute when Said El Eyssami finished off a feed from Henry Bernstein and Dominic Ayella to make it 1-0. Pitt had chances of its own in the opening 45, with Caden Grabfelder, Mamadou Tall and Carter Kopay all testing the visiting keeper, but the Panthers went to the break trailing by a goal despite matching the Terrapins in shots on frame.
El Eyssami struck again just after the restart, converting in the 47th minute off assists from Bernstein and Ljubomir Popovic to push the lead to 2-0. Pitt answered less than 20 minutes later when Mamadou Tall, who was a constant threat up top all night, buried a chance in the 66th minute off a Pablo Portero assist to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Panthers pushed hard for the equalizer down the stretch, outshooting Maryland 9-3 in the second half alone and finishing the match with a 14-6 advantage in total shots and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. Pitt also controlled the ball for 61 percent of the match
Tall led all Pitt players with five shots on the night, while Grabfelder and Scretchen each added two shots of their own.
The Panthers will return to action on Monday night, hosting Bucknell at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. on ACCNX.
