YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Pitt women's 4x400m relay team of seniors Morgan Harvey, Quadaisha Newkirk, Laila Ismail and Desiree Garland set a Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) facility record with a time of 3:41.20 Friday at the YSU College Invitational.
As of Friday's events, the women's time was the top mark among ACC schools so far this indoor season.
"Our team took another step in the right direction again this weekend in terms of preparedness, performances, competitiveness and focus," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "We still have some work to do to get to where we ultimately want to be but I can see progress in many areas with some of the younger athletes learning how to compete at this level. It's always nice and important to end the meet on a high note with wins in the last event of the day – the 4x400m relays – and we were able to do that today. Our women set a meet and facility record and top time in the ACC, and our men came away with a win and improved their performance in the ACC as well. There were many more notable performances but we are trying to learn to accept them as expectations rather than exceptions."
The win was one of seven on the day for the Panthers, which included the men's 4x400m relay of freshman Ade Jones-Roundtree, sophomore Dante Watson, junior Ken Brosier and freshman Lonzell Feagin (3:12.81).
On the women's side, Ismail claimed the 400m at 55.75 and sophomore Taylor Middleton championed the long jump at 5.84m.
The men's distance team had an impressive day with Watson winning the 800m (1:52.07), sophomore Nick Wolk winning the mile (4:12.40) and junior Ryan Hughes winning the 3000m (8:27.03).
"Although Miranda Salvo just missed out on a win in the 800m she was able to break the facility record along the way and move into the top ten in the ACC," Webb said. "Sophomore Taylor Middleton was able to improve her standing in the ACC long jump from eleventh to fourth. Sophomore Dante Watson picked up a win in the 800m and is now second in the ACC at 1:52.07."
Pitt had 10 more student-athletes make top-3 finishes in their respective events, including:
