Pitt Sweeps Shot Put at Pepsi Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Pitt performed well at the Pepsi Florida Relays, highlighted by a sweep the shot put, as Emeka Ugwu and Niya Crawford powered their way to victories.
FRIDAY RECAP
- Eva Baldursdottir and Alesia Rengle were selected to compete in the women's high jump invite section, featuring 14 of the best high jumpers from across the country. Baldursdottir finished sixth as she leaped 1.76 meters while Rengle cleared 1.73 meters for ninth place.
- The group of Faith Dennis, Somiyah Braggs, Endeyah Lane and Alma Evuna Eki ran a season's best in the 4x100 relay, stopping the clock in 45.12, but did not advance to the final.
- On the men's side, the quartet of Darren McQueen Jr.,Che Nwabuko, Jaden Shelton and James Long advanced out of the 4x100 relay prelim with their time of 40.09.
- Both Alexandria Scott and Jana Bruses recorded personal bests and hit the ACC standard in the 400 meters hurdles. Scott was the top Panther with a 58.63 speed while Bruses crossed the finish line in 59.14. Scott lifted from eighth to sixth in the program's record books.
- The women's 4x400 relay squad of Scott, Evuna Eki, Bruses and Faith Dennis produced a season's best 3:38.19 to finish eighth and bring the first day of competition to a close.
SATURDAY RECAP
- Emeka Ugwu earned the first victory of the weekend with his 18.43 meters throw in the shot put on his final attempt to claim first.
- Josiah Montgomery recorded a mark of 17.35 meters in the same event to claim eighth.
- Senior Uri Arnon secured seventh place in the men's triple jump with his distance of 14.85 meters.
- Margaret Bila placed 16th in the discus with a 44.42 meters toss.
- Malachi Williams made his outdoor debut, running the 400 meters in 47.16.
- Somiyah Braggs hit a new personal best time of 11.45 in the 100 meters. Braggs moves from third to second all-time in program history. The junior won her heat and finished 14th overall.
- Che Nwabuko also posted a personal best and a top 10 program time in the men's 100 meters. Nwabuko stopped the clock in 10.48, a pace that is tied for seventh in the program's record book.
- Darren McQueen Jr., who is second in the 100 meters in program history with his previous time of 10.23, recorded a 10.39 time on Saturday.
- Niya Crawford completed the Panthers' shot put sweep as she won the women's competition with her mark of 16.49 meters. Crawford has now won the women's shot put at all three outdoor meets this season.
- The men's 4x400 relay team of James Long, Cole Strother, Malachi Williams and Colin Kravitz were invited to compete in the invite section of the race where they finished fifth with their collective effort of 3:09.60.
