Pitt Remains Unbeaten with 1-1 Tie at Xavier
CINCINNATI – For the third consecutive outing, the University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team competed in a two-overtime battle as the Panthers fought to a 1-1 tie at Xavier Sunday afternoon.
A goal in the 84th minute off the head of Seyla Perez tied the game late for the Panthers. Sarah Krause was credited with the assist as Pitt moves to 2-0-2 on the season.
"Today was one of those contests where you are tested to the limits and find a way to make it through," said head coach Greg Miller. "Credit Xavier for putting us under pressure and playing hard. We had to come from behind for the first time all season and our players did a good job of making the proper adjustments to do so. While a draw is never a satisfactory result, we got out of the weekend still undefeated. It's a short week with Detroit on Wednesday, so it's a quick turnaround."
Xavier tallied the game's first goal in the 35th minute as Sydney Schemrbi converted a set piece to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Redshirt freshman Amaia Pena took over in net in the second half, making five saves in 65 minutes of play as she made her collegiate debut. Fellow redshirt freshman keeper Katelyn McEachern earned the start, making four saves in 45 minutes of play.
Perez tallied the lone goal for the Panthers off two shots, while Kendall Higgs recorded three shots and Krause, Vildan Kardesler and Hanna Hannesdottir each added two. Xavier out-shot the Panthers 18-12 and 10-6 on goal. Pitt was forced to make nine saves, to Xavier's five.
