COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in its season opener against Ohio State Friday night. The Buckeyes netted the game-winner with 35 seconds remaining in regulation to secure the win at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
"I'm very proud of our performance tonight," said second-year head coach Jay Vidovich. "We dominated the game in numerous ways. We created more corners, we dominated them defensively and turned them over when we needed to and we pressed them, but the bottom line is that we made a mistake and they capitalized on it."
"The other side of this is that when looking at it as a staff and team, we're ambitious with what we're trying to do and the way we play. It is always harder to create and build something than it is to destroy something. My biggest takeaway from this game is that we have tremendous potential with this group."
Despite suffering a loss, Pitt dominated the majority of the match, recording 16 total shots, five of which were on goal. Ohio State attempted six with just two on goal.
Freshman Marcony Pimentel provided a spark to the Panther offense, sending in four shots with one on goal. Sophomore Josh Coan and senior Pol Planellas both recorded three shots respectively.
In goal, redshirt sophomore Mikal Outcalt made just one save as the Buckeyes took six total shots with two on goal.
Pitt's offensive threat earned them five corners to Ohio State's three. Of the five corner kicks, four Panthers were able to get shots off but couldn't get anything past the Buckeye defensive line.
Pitt resumes action in Columbus Sunday, Aug. 28 when it faces James Madison at 4 p.m.
