COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Pitt men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to James Madison Sunday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, as part of the 12th Annual Wolstein Classic.
With the loss, Pitt moves to 0-2 on the season, while the Dukes improve to 1-0-1.
"We weren't good enough today and I have to be humble and take the responsibility for our loss against James Madison," head coach Jay Vidovich said. "Our efforts and execution isn't what I expect from a player wearing the Pitt jersey. Bottom line is that we competed with four men with a winning mentality. The 'boys' on the field with them need to step up quickly. I am excited to see if any of them are willing to join us in our home opener against Longwood this Friday."
James Madison came out attacking early on, registering eight shots in the first half and sending in the lone goal of the game in the 34th minute. JMU's Billy Metzler put in a rebound from 12 yards out that and that would be enough. The Dukes went on to take five more shots in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Five different Panthers recorded shots, three of which were on goal. Pitt drew five corners throughout the 90 minutes, but were unable to capitalize.
In goal, redshirt sophomore Mikal Outcalt made five saves, allowing just one to get past him.
The Panthers return to Pittsburgh Friday, Sept. 1 when they host Longwood in the home opener at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
