PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team officially opens the 2017 season with a pair of road matches versus Ohio State and James Madison in Columbus, Ohio at the 12th Annual Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic.
The Panthers first take on the Buckeyes Friday, August 25 at 7 p.m. and will then face the Dukes Sunday, Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. Pitt's game against the host team will be streamed live on BTN2Go (subscription required), while both games will have live stats.
VIDOVICH ENTERS SECOND SEASON
- Head coach Jay Vidovich enters his second year at the helm of the Pitt soccer program and his 23rd season overall on the sidelines.
- Vidovich owns a 274-134-53 career record (.652).
- The two-time NSCAA Coach of the Year has produced over 35 professional players, 21 All-Americans and five ACC Player of the Year honorees.
- Prior to Pitt, Vidovich spent 21 seasons at Wake Forest where the team captured the 2007 National Championship, made four College Cup appearances and claimed five ACC regular season titles.
2017 PANTHERS AT A GLANCE
- Pitt returns 12 players from a year ago and added 10 new faces to the roster.
- Highlighting the returners is senior defender Bryce Cregan, junior defender Tom Moxham and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mikal Outcalt all of whom played significant minutes in 2016.
- The large group of newcomers consist of six players that joined the squad for the 2016 spring season, while the remaining four will put on a Pitt jersey for the first time Sunday.
- Vidovich added two transfers to the 2017 roster in senior defender Robby Dambrot from Akron and redshirt senior defender Mauriq Hill from Clemson.
CREGAN, PEREZ NAMED CAPTAINS
- Senior Bryce Cregan will captain the team again in 2017, this year with the help of junior Javi Perez.
- Cregan, a strong defender, started and played in 16 total games for Pitt last season, registering three shots on goal.
- Although joining the team in January of 2017, Perez will officially join the Panthers Friday when they open the season at Ohio State.
- Perez, a native of Valencia, Spain, brings years of invaluable experience to Pittsburgh after training with Valencia CF, one of the top youth academies in Spain's La Liga.
A LOOK AT THE 2017 OPPONENTS
- Pitt will play eight teams ranked in the top-25 preseason United Soccer Coaches poll.
- Eight of those opponents were also NCAA tournament teams a year ago, with two reaching in the Final Four and four to the Elite Eight.
- The Panthers will host nine opponents at Ambrose Urbanic Field, which will feature four ACC foes and long-time rivals West Virginia and Penn State.
- Pitt opens the regular season August 25 at Ohio State.
SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
- The Panthers and Buckeyes clash for the 13th time in program history, with Pitt leading the series, 6-4-2.
- The two teams have not met since the 2003 season.
- Ohio State concluded the 2016 season 5-13-1 overall with a 3-4-1 mark against Big Ten opponents.
- The Buckeyes were knocked out of the conference tournament in the first round by Wisconsin.
SCOUTING THE DUKES
- The Panthers conclude their weekend in Columbus with James Madison, meeting for just the second time in program history and for the first time since 2010.
- The Dukes wrapped up 2016 5-9-3 overall while going 3-3-2 against CAA foes.
