Shayann Vaezzadeh Named Assistant Tennis Coach
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh head tennis coach Alex Santos announced Wednesday evening the addition of Shayann Vaezzadeh as the assistant coach.
"We feel very fortunate to have Shayann as part of the Pitt tennis family," Santos said. "Shayann is a rising star in the world of college tennis. The work he has done in the past couple season coaching, recruiting and setting the bar higher, has been noticed on a national level. Shayann believes in doing the right thing and his ambition and passion for the game are remarkable."
Vaezzadeh spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach of the women's tennis team at his alma mater, the University of South Alabama. During his time with the Jaguars, he helped lead the team to a 2015 Sun Belt Conference Championship while earning a runner-up finish a year ago. Entering the 2015 season, Vaezzadeh also assisted in recruiting the No. 1 class amongst mid-major schools.
During the summer of 2016, Vaezzadeh spent time at the Oakton Swim and Racket Club in Oakton, Va., at the tennis director where he was in charge of numerous activities and developing tennis players.
"I would like to thank Coach Santos and the search committee for giving me the opportunity to join the Panther family," Vaezzadeh said. "I am thrilled to become a part of this great institution and I am looking forward to help build on this program and set it up for success. I cannot wait to start competing in the ACC and I believe that the sky is the limit here at the University of Pittsburgh."
Vaezzadeh graduated from South Alabama in December of 2014 with a bachelor's degree in business management with a focus in international business. However, before obtaining his degree, Vaezzadeh enjoyed a standout collegiate career. Vaezzadeh was a three-year captain while garnering First and Second Team Sun Belt All-Conference honors in 2012 and 2014.
Vaezzadeh also played on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour and ranked in the top 20 junior players in France.
