PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh head tennis coach Alex Santos announced that the Panthers will take a 12-day tour of Spain beginning August 6. The team will train and compete in Barcelona, Manacor and Mallorca.
"This trip will be a fantastic opportunity for our student-athletes to create lifelong memories," Santos said. "We are very thankful for the generosity of the Vartabedian family to help make this possible. We also appreciate all of the hard work our administration and staff at Pitt put in to help bring this trip together. Training and competing in Spain, which is considered a powerhouse in the tennis world, and experiencing a unique culture will go a long way towards building a strong team for the 2017-18 season. We believe in developing the total student-athlete at Pitt, and this will be a major contributor to that."
While the group will get to sightsee and visit various places in Spain, the team will train and compete in numerous facilities throughout the trip. Highlighting the training experience will be a practice session at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, Spain. Rafael "Rafa" Nadal is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players in history. The Panthers will train every morning in preparation for the upcoming fall season and will compete against local players throughout the trip.
"I'm really excited to travel to Spain with my teammates," said rising junior Gabriela Rezende. "This is an amazing opportunity for us to learn more about the Spanish culture, have the experience of playing in well-considered Spanish tennis academies and to create wonderful and everlasting memories together."
The 2017-18 Pitt tennis roster consists of two student-athletes that are natives of Spain in rising junior Clara Lucas of Valencia and incoming freshman Claudia Bartolome of Torredembarra.
