CLEMSON, S.C. - The Pitt tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the Clemson Tigers Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
The Panthers put up a fight in doubles, but were unable to clinch the point as well as any singles matches.
"We played an incredible doubles point that we shouldn't have lost," said head coach Alex Santos. "After that, we weren't able to regroup emotionally and to show our best tennis. We have to keep learning from these moments and transform the disappointment into positive energy."
Pitt was off to a solid start in doubles, as senior Audrey Ann Blakely and sophomore Clara Lucas turned in the first win of the day on court two, 6-2. The Panthers' No. 1 doubles team of redshirt senior Amber Washington and junior Callie Frey fell behind early to the 35th-ranked Tigers team of Ayan Broomfield and Marie Leduc, 2-1. However, the Pitt team worked their way back to tie it 5-5, but it wouldn't be enough as the Clemson duo would win it, 7-5. With the doubles point on the line, the sophomore tandem of Gabriela Rezende and Natsumi Okamoto jumped to a solid 3-0 lead, but fell behind to drop a 7-6(5) decision giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
In singles, Clemson won three consecutive matches in straight sets to lock up the dual, 4-0.
Frey was the lone Panther to take a set from her ACC opponent, but ultimately fell 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(11-9), at No. 4.
The Panthers return home Friday, March 24 to host Georgia Tech at 4 p.m. before taking on Florida State Sunday, March 26 at noon.
