LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Pitt tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the 49th-ranked Louisville Cardinals Saturday afternoon at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"It wasn't out best day on the tennis court but we will focus on the positives like Clara [Lucas] and Natsumi [Okamoto] stepping up for us and showing great character," head coach Alex Santos said. "We are already focusing on the next match and trying to make the small adjustments that always make the difference."
Louisville clinched the doubles point as well as five singles matches, while sophomore Clara Lucas turned in the lone win for the Panthers.
The Cardinals jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the dual after clinching the doubles point. The Pitt sophomore tandem of Gabriela Rezende and Natsumi Okamoto first fell 6-2 on court three, followed by a loss by the same score on court two from senior Audrey Ann Blakely and Lucas.
In singles, Blakely fell first at the No. 1 position in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Soon after, Rezende fell on court three in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Okamoto and junior Callie Frey also fell in straight sets on No. 6 and No. 4, respectively.
On court two, Washington dropped the first set 6-3, but her second set effort wouldn't be enough as she fell 7-5.
Lucas was the lone Panther to turn in a victory on the day as she outlasted Olivia Boesing, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Pitt resumes action on the road Saturday, March 3 at Syracuse.
