
Pitt Rookie Named Pentathlon Runner-Up on Day 1 at Kent State

Breanna Phillips Wins Two Events En Route to Second-Place Finish
RESULTS
KENT, Ohio – Pitt freshman Breanna Phillips placed first in two events and finished second overall in the women's pentathlon on the first day of competition at the Golden Flash Gala, hosted by Kent State at Kent State Field House Friday.
"We are very excited with how Breanna [Phillips] managed the first pentathlon of her career," multi-events and jumps coach Alonzo Webb III said. "She approached each event the way we planned and executed it. She has the ability to improve and contribute to this program for many years to come."
In her first collegiate meet, the rookie was runner-up with 3,453 points after placing in the top four in all five events of the pentathlon. She tied for first in the high jump with a leap of 1.61m, and won the 800m run at 2:24.07. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native took second in the 60m hurdles (9.17), third in long jump (5.26m) and fourth in shot put (8.49m). She was just 15 points out of first place, behind Ashland's Marie Hammer (3,468).
Other Panthers with top-three outings included senior Andin Fosam, who placed third in weight throw (19.33m) and sophomore Taylor Middleton, who took third in long jump (5.62m).
Freshman Ali Wyland placed ninth in her long jump debut at 5.17m. Other rookies competing for the first time were Noah Walker in men's weight throw (14.44m, 15th) and Antoinette Gyles in women's weight throw (12.69m, 28th).
With two events to be completed Saturday, freshman Cobe Wiggins sits in 13th place in the men's heptathlon. The Huntingdon Valley, Pa., native will finish the event with 60m hurdles and pole vault.
Senior Caroline DeFrank and junior Stephanie Lednak took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women's 5000m. DeFrank posted a time of 18:00.03, and Lednak finished in 19:11.08.
PANTHER DEBUTS
In addition to the five who competed today, 14 Panthers will make their collegiate track and field debut at the meet this weekend, including seven on the women's side and seven for the men.
