Panthers Resume Action Tuesday, Oct. 24 vs. Akron
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double overtime thriller to No. 10 Virginia Friday night at Klöckner Stadium.
With the loss, the Panthers move to 8-7 overall and drop to 2-5 against ACC opponents. Virginia improves to 10-2-3 overall and are now 3-1-3 against conference foes.
"I believe we deserved more from tonight's match," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "Our guys were warriors. They fought back from a goal down to even the game on a goal that should have never occurred. Javi [Perez] and Pol [Planellas] bossed the midfield, but credit to the Virginia defense as we lacked final actions. The match had two moments that changed the game in Virginia's favor. In the end, we made a naive mistake that cost us the match. My men have shown tremendous resiliency and growth throughout the season, so I know I can count on them to grow from this."
The Cavaliers out-shot Pitt 6-1 through the 107 minutes and finished the match with a 9-1 advantage in corners.
Virginia struck first late in the opening half, off the foot of Raheem Taylor-Parkes in the 40th minute.
The Panthers responded in the 76th minute, thanks to a nice move inside the box by freshman Alexander Dexter as he beat the UVA goalkeeper one-on-one. Dexter's goal was his sixth of the season.
Pitt and the Cavaliers were knotted 1-1 at the end of regulation and again at the end of the first overtime.
Virginia found the golden goal in the 107th minute as Jean-Christophe Koffi made his way past two Pitt defenders and sent in a laser from the top of the box to the upper left 90.
The Panthers resume action Tuesday, Oct. 24 when the Akron Zips make the trip to Pittsburgh. Pitt's final non-conference is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
