CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Pitt tennis team concluded action at the Miami Fall Invite Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, compiling a record of 13-18 through the weekend.
"I am very pleased with the way we competed and executed in doubles throughout the entire tournament," head coach Alex Santos said. "We trusted our preparation and played with our best weapons independently of the score. In singles Audrey Ann [Blakely] and Gabriela [Rezende] finished with a positive record which is difficult to accomplish at this level. Clara [Lucas] showed us some really good things and we are excited to take her game to the next level. I believe we have a solid base to build upon and we will prepare with excitement for the Northwestern Invite."
Sunday picked up where action left off on Saturday with singles. Pitt took on host Miami, which included three nationally ranked players. Sophomore Gabriela Rezende was the lone Panther to defeat her Miami opponent in Dominika Paterova, 6-2, 6-3.
Pitt then moved to doubles, where the team took on Miami once again, going 2-1. The duo of junior Callie Frey and redshirt senior Amber Washington defeated Maci Epstein and Estela Perez-Somarriba, 6-4, while the sophomore tandem of Rezende and Clara Lucas defeated Silvia Fuentes and Yolimar Ogando, 6-3. The veteran doubles team of junior Audrey Ann Blakely and senior Lolade Ogungbesan dropped a hard-fought 7-5 decision to Miami's Sinead Lohan and Dominika Paterova.
The Panthers then returned to singles action, this time facing FIU. Pitt struggled against the other Panthers, as No. 122 Blakely was the lone player to pick up a win, 6-3, 6-2, over Nina Nagode.
Overall, Blakely and Rezende concluded the weekend 2-1 in singles, respectively. In doubles, the tandem of Frey and Washington finished with a perfect 3-0 record.
Pitt resumes its fall schedule Friday, Sept. 30, in Evanston, Ill., at the Wildcat Invite.
