BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Audrey Ann Blakely, Callie Frey, Lolade Ogungbesan and Amber Washington represented Pitt tennis in the ITA Summer Circuit Tournament held in Blacksburg, Va., on July 11-13.
The Panthers dominated the open doubles tournament as the teams of Lolade Ogungbesan/Amber Washington and Audrey Ann Blakely/Callie Frey navigated a 14-team field to play one another in an all-Pitt final. Ogungbesan and Washington defeated Blakely and Frey, 8-6, in the championship match.
"We are so excited to congratulate Audrey Ann, Callie, Lolade, and Amber on making this an all-Pitt final," said head coach Alex Santos. "Obviously we would like that to happen at all times, but we know the difficulty of the task so we'll enjoy the moment."
Pitt also had an impressive showing in the open singles tournament. Junior Audrey Ann Blakely advanced to the championship match, defeating ACC foe Katherine Butler of Virginia Tech 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals. Blakely finished as tournament runner-up and a 4-1 record.
"Audrey Ann played a great tournament and was a couple details away from lifting the trophy," said Santos. "I am sure she will find that balance between enjoying a fabulous performance and gaining confidence from it, all while continuing to cultivate her ambition for becoming bigger and better."
Sophomore Callie Frey also finished with a 4-1 record in singles play. After dropping an opening round match, Frey rebounded to win four straight and breeze to a 6-1, 6-0 win in the consolation final. Both Lolade Ogungbesan (2-1) and Amber Washington (1-1) competed as well, advancing to the quarterfinals and round of 16, respectively.
Sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the ITA Summer Circuit events are intended to promote friendly competition and allow collegiate players the opportunity to maintain their game over the summer months. There were 78 participants in the three-day tournament.
