FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Four University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis players competed in the ITA-sanctioned Mary Washington Invitational from June 27-29, which was highlighted by a doubles title and an appearance in the finals of the singles bracket from Callie Frey.
“We’re happy to see our student-athletes competing during the summer and more importantly than that, being very competitive,” head coach Alex Santos said. “We knew that Callie had a great tennis IQ coming into Pitt, and our goal has always been to make her game bigger and more aggressive. It is great to see her growing in those areas and reaching her first intercollegiate summer circuit final. We know her passion for the game is increasing and with that, her ambition will grow as well.”
Frey won her first five singles matches of the tournament before falling to University of Florida sophomore Spencer Liang 6-0, 6-4 in the championship match.
Frey opened the tournament as an eight-seed and started off her singles run with an 8-2 win over Villanova freshman Victoria Martinez. She followed up the initial victory with wins over Jackie McDermott (Oberlin College) and Isabel Aldunate (Maryland Baltimore County), before knocking off fellow Panther Lolade Ogungbesan in the quarterfinal as Ogungbesan withdrew.
A 6-0, 6-2 win over Kamilla Beisenova of Elon took Frey into the finals before she fell to Liang.
Frey and Liang would square off again in the women’s doubles bracket, with Frey getting the last laugh as she and teammate Audrey Ann Blakely downed Liang and Rider to win the open doubles championship.
The second-seeded doubles pairing received a first-round bye before scoring an 8-1 win in the round of 16 and an 8-2 win in the quarterfinal round. Another 8-2 triumph over Owens/Owens in the semis propelled Blakely and Frey into the tournament final and the duo defeated Liang/Rider 8-5 for the title.
“Audrey Ann and Callie made it to the final in doubles and were able to beat a very strong team. They will take a lot of confidence moving forward and keep pushing the bar for Pitt tennis.”
Also competing for the Panthers were Amber Washington and Lolade Ogungbesan who both made the quarterfinals of the singles bracket. The duo also teamed up in doubles and withdrew in the round of 16.
Blakely, Frey, Ogungbesan and Washington will all return to next year’s team and will be joined by four incoming freshmen.
