Pitt Tennis Falls to Clemson, 7-0

CLEMSON, S.C. -- The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team (2-13, 0-10 ACC) was defeated by No. 22 Clemson (12-7, 7-3 ACC) on Friday afternoon by the score of 7-0 at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
"The beauty of sport is that there is always another opportunity to achieve greatness," head coach Alex Santos said. "Today we could have done a better job in doubles of coming out of the gates swinging. In singles, we did that and played solid first sets across the board. After that we let the scoreboard dictate our mindset and that affected the quality of our tennis. We now need to focus on NC State and each girl finding their best tennis."
The Panthers had a tough time in doubles as Clemson won the point with 8-1 victories on courts one and two. On court one, the nation's third ranked doubles team of Clemson's Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies improved their overall record to 25-3. Court three was left unfinished.
In fifth singles, Katherine Castro took the first set from Daniela Ruiz 6-3, but ultimately lost a third set tie break. Ruiz would go on to win 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2).
Audrey Ann Blakely put up a solid effort in the opening set against the 35th ranked Romy Koelzer on court one, but lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. In fourth singles, Callie Frey took Jessy Rompies to the brink in the opening set, but eventually fell 7-5-6-1.
The Panthers now turn their attention to NC State (9-11, 0-9 ACC) on Saturday. The match with the Wolfpack is scheduled for 1 p.m.
