GREENSBORO - Junior Kaleigh Ritter opened up the 2015 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships with another school record on Thursday morning in the 500-yd freestyle prelims.
Ritter touched the wall in 4:44.10, which was 0.22 seconds faster than the school record she set at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships a month ago. Entering the season, both the school record and Ritter's lifetime best stood at 4:44.36.
Overall, Ritter's time placed her 32nd in the event out of 55 swimmers. She entered the meet with the 51st fastest time on the season. The top 16 times advanced to the finals. Coming down the stretch, Ritter's posted a 27.32 split for her final 50-yd sprint, good for the fifth fastest last 50.
"We were excited to see Kaleigh finish her 500 so strong," said head coach Chuck Knoles. "In setting a new school record, Kaleigh also finished the race faster than she's ever done in that swim. It was great to see the improvement. We're encouraged about her 1650 on Saturday."
Ritter is idle until Saturday when she swims the 1650 free.
