Pitt Tennis Suffers 6-1 Setback to Boston College

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team (2-8, 0-5 ACC) won the doubles point but was unable to sustain momentum in singles and suffered a 6-1 loss to Boston College (8-6, 2-2 ACC) on Friday night at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
The Panthers gained a 1-0 advantage by winning on doubles courts two and three. The first match to finish was Molly Wickman and Amber Washington in third doubles as they topped BC's Emily Safron and Jennifer Ren, 8-5. Wickman and Washington improved their team-best doubles record to 7-3.
In second doubles, Katherine Castro and Lolade Ogungbesan clinched the point for the Panthers in dramatic fashion by winning a tiebreak over Katya Vasilyev and Asiya Dair 8-7 (5). Down 7-6 in the match, the Pitt tandem rallied to even the score, and went on to win 7-5 in the tiebreak which gave the Panthers the double point.
In first doubles, Audrey Ann Blakely and Callie Frey left their match unfinished once Pitt had clinched the point. The duo was trailing BC's Jessica Wacnik and Lexi Borr 7-6 when they match was left incomplete.
The Eagles though, stormed back in singles and won every match to earn the 6-1 victory.
BC evened the match at 1-1 with a victory in fifth singles as Emily Safron topped Pitt's Katherine Castro 6-3, 6-1. Court three then gave the Eagles a 2-1 advantage as Asiya Dair, the 118th ranked player in the country, defeated Callie Frey 6-1, 6-2.
The Eagles then gained a 3-1 lead as No. 71 Jessica Wacnik defeated Audrey Ann Blakely 6-2, 6-2 on court one, and clinched the match in fourth singles as Amber Washington fell to BC's Katya Vasilyev 6-3, 6-2.
The last two courts to finish were Molly Wickman in sixth singles and Lolade Ogungbesan in second singles. Wickman suffered a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Heini Salonen, while Ogungbesan took a set from Lexi Borr, but ultimately fell 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
It is a quick turnaround for the Panthers as they host No. 63 Wake Forest on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
